Visible ... barely (Pelecanus occidentalis)

Thought I'd show a different type of disappearing images for fun shots today - not birds flying away, but objects staying close or even staying still that nevertheless disappeared.

It took a big bird to be visible through the fog when I arrived at Chimney Rock. Luckily, there were some big birds about. Also luckily, the fog did lift, or at least lighten a bit around noon that day. Even so ... I've bumped up the contrast on this shot to nearly +100! Without the post-processing, you'd barely have seen the bird at all. I'm amazed my camera found enough contrast to focus :eek!:
The pelican, by the way, had just dived. Too bad I missed a shot of the dive itself. That was really fun to watch; they just sort of crumple up and fall headfirst into the water :D At least I managed to catch it on its way back up, which is also quite a show with that wingspan.

Even with the fog, it is still a neat take off shot Doc.

:-O

It amazes me how such large birds can lift off anyway, it must be even harder to take off from water!!!

Nice one for SF Ann - thanks lassie.

It is very nice that considering that adverse conditions you have not missed it .
This is a very nice shot of this lovely pelican in take off , many tfs Ann ;)

Great shot for a foggy day, Doc! I once got a picture of a White-tailed Eagle flying though the mist as we arrived at an island in the archipelago and this picture reminds me of that incident.
