Wandering Tattler

Wandering Tattler (Heteroscelus incanus)

Allways difficult to see wich Tattler it is. I think it is a Wandering because of the length of the nasal groove (around 2/3 of the lenght of the bill). Grey-tailed has a groove max half of the bill.

Normally these birds are shy but when you stay as low near the ground as possible the birds are better to approach. It costed me a wet pants (seawater!) to get this picture.Jack

Location
Aitutaki, Cook Islands
Date taken
25 march 2007
Scientific name
Heteroscelus incanus
Equipment used
Canon D1 Mk II, 300/4, 1,4x
The bird has shown sign of breeding plumage. The white eye does not extend beyond eye. The nasal groove is right. See my photo for IDing the species http://www.lazybirder.blogspot.com/
You should not wash your pants. They have the sea water of Aitutaki.

Nice shot. Wandering is not a species we see much in Japan, but we see plenty of Grey-tailed.

I don't know about nasal grooves, but Wandering in my limited experience tend to be more slate grey above, have brighter orange legs (more yellowish in Gret-tailed), and have more extensive grey wash on the face and breast than Grey-tailed...as well as totally different call. In summer plumage they are relatively easy to tell apart. Wouldn't have though Greyt-ailed was all that regular in the Cook Islands anyway.
