West Peruvian Dove

West Peruvian Dove (Zenaida meloda)

This close relative of the White-winged Dove (Zenaida asiatica) is restricted to arid areas along the west coast of Peru, adjacent Ecuador, and Chile where it has been expanding its range. The West Peruvian Dove is more deeply colored overall compared to White-winged Dove. Even more significant is its very different vocalization, "coo-coo-LEE" from which it gets its local name, "Cucul."
