White-breasted Nuthatch (Sitta carolinensis)

Nuthatches, though common, are an enigmatic bird. They seem to live apart from the rest of the world. There is very little interaction with other birds, except at the feeders, where they give way to larger birds, but only just by moving out of the way. They are very vocal and seem to announce there arrival. Not shy, they will allow close approaches. Yet the moment a camera is pointed at them they are gone.

The aesthetics of this emage is a compromise. My brother's girl-friend made the suet feeder with me in mind. The trunk is cottonwood tree; the perch is manzaneta. I call it a "Frankenperch". But it works to pull the little "enigmatic" nuthatch in.
