White-breasted Nuthatch

White-breasted Nuthatch (Sitta carolinensis)

What an interesting day I had with the birds yesterday. I think the populations of Finches, Juncos and Sparrows are shifting. Ive noticed that there are fewer Goldfinches that I had a few weeks ago, more House Finches, and only a handful of Juncos compared to the large flock I had early November. There are four or five Pine Siskins here yesterday as well. The Hairy, Downy, Red-bellied Woodpeckers were all here yesterday as well as the Northern Flicker.

While observing the finches doing what they do best (eat and squabble) I heard the White-breasted Nuthatches making quite a fuss on the tree nearest my hide. Well there were two pair of birds and the resident Nuthatches werent a bit pleased to see the newcomers. Both males and females were doing this display where theyd fan out their wing and tail feathers while climbing up and down the tree. It was pretty interesting to watch. Of course they were moving too fast for the amount of light available and I didnt think to change any settings so all I got from the display shots were blurred images or the one great image I have of half the male Nutty with wings and tail spread. Would have been a terrific shot if he hadnt walked out of the frame. LOL Anyway, this shot of the female you can see the wings are dropped and the tail partially fanned. She was taking a break while the male continued the display. Such fascinating creatures!

What a smoking shot of this Nuthatch. I have yet to see one of this species. My mouth dropped open when I opened this one up. Beautiful.
