It is found in Bangladesh, Bhutan, Cambodia, India, Laos, Myanmar, Nepal, Thailand, and Vietnam. Its natural habitats are temperate forests and subtropical or tropical moist montane forests.
This bird utilizes bamboo to make nests and living areas. It uses its feet to pick up broken bamboo, and its beak to tear off bamboo that is partially broken.
910 cm; 83118g. Male has rufous to orange-rufous forehead and forecrown, with bright golden-yellow patch in centre of forehead.
Short sharp chi or tsick; fast high-pitched trill starting with call, chi-rrrrrrrra or ti-i.
Dense low vegetation in broadleaved evergreen and mixed deciduous forest.
Ants and their brood, small bark beetles (Scolytidae), spiders. Occurs singly, in pairs or in small groups of 4 or 5.
