Whitehead (Mohoua albicilla)

Lifer nr. 2, taken as our guide was talking about the replanting of the island to native forest. I think the Whiteheads are among the species that have repopulated Tiritiri Matangi on their own now that it's reforested. A number of species have been set out here as breeding projects based on rescued birds from elsewhere, including some species from South Island. But the Whiteheads, though not as numerous as they once were, are still fairly common where habitat remains as they like it on or near North Island. So "common" that our guide wasn't even talking about them when she stopped at this spot. I had to show her this pic and ask what I'd seen ;)

That's a lovely image that Ann. I'm surprised the guide wasn't ready to point one out to you though. She should have known you needed to see one;)
