Wild Turkey (Meleagris gallopavo)

We counted 50 of these turkeys at one of our state parks last week. I had to laugh when we noticed the hens were outnumbered and totally ignored all the toms.

Great shot of these big guys!  I think maybe the hens tend to sit well camouflaged in trees nearby, and that they just pretend to be uninterested ;) First time I watched this I had a "balcony seat" view, looking down into a gully from Warrington Road (up Mount Taylor from the Petaluma Hill Road). The toms reminded me of old Portuguese warships maneuvering around a harbor under full sail, but looking closer of course they were tiptoeing around on busy feet, even as they seemed to float smoothly past one another. The hens, meanwhile, just pecked as if foraging at the edges of the lek space, pretending not to notice, but after half an hour or so the toms paraded off in different directions into the woods around the lek space ... and the hens followed after, each staying close to whichever tom had caught her eye.
