Wood Duck

Wood Duck (Aix sponsa)

We were pleased to find a pair of these colorful but wary North American endemic ducks. Note female on far left. They prefer wooded swamps where they often hide in deep shade. They are partly migratory in our area and these are the first I have seen this year. Virtually extirpated by over-hunting in the San Francisco Bay Area by the late 19th and early 20th century, this species has recovered over recent decades.
Location
La Honda, California, USA
Date taken
09 November 2020
Scientific name
Aix sponsa
Equipment used
Canon PowerShot SX60 HS
A great shot of this pair in a lovely setting and pretty lighting, Joseph.

He really is so strongly marked and colourful, isn't he Joe.

That's a grand picture you've taken of them lad very well done. You know I'd not have noticed her if you hadn't said LOL.

I'm pleased to hear that they're making a come-back.
