Woodie (Columba palumbus)

One of the first birds that made me realize I was in for a world of confusion doing birding in two languages. In English this is a Wood Pigeon. There is also a pigeon called Skogsdue in Norwegian - literally Wood Pigeon, but not. Nope, that's a Stock Dove. Wood Pigeon is called Ringdue (Ringed Dove), even though the "ring" doesn't go all the way 'round its neck and would seem to be a name better suited for the Collared Dove. Sigh. The Tringas are even worse. I haven't got those totally sorted yet.

I've got the same confusion between some names in English and Dutch (my mother tongue), Ann, not to mention French (after more than 30 years in France I still don't know the French names of many of the birds). No matter what the name, a gorgeous photo you have of this lovely pigeon, top marks, many tfs!!!

Looking very smart against that sky, Ann. It must be difficult birding in two languages.

LOL it really, really can be confusing can't it Ann.

At least your Woodie here doesn't care what you call him does he!! Thanks for the smile lass.

Even without the linguistic differences, wood pigeons often cause enough confusion here... we have not less than five wood pigeons!
Good shot!
