Looks like a Gilded Flicker.

I did a search and I think it's a Northern Flicker (Colaptes auratus)

Super shot, Luke. If you were in Arizona or Baja I would say this is a Gilded Flicker because of the brown going down the back of his head. But you must be correct, as Gilded isn't shown to be in California - at least according to Sibley.
