Impressive job for such a small creature. Do they always build so close to the ground? The elongated opening is similar to that of Black Woodpeckers, and the two species resemble one another, but Black Woodies build higher up.

Not normally so low to the ground. Can hear their call and have seen much evidence of their appetite in other trees in the same woods. Just pecking out a meal at this point.
