Yellow-bellied Sapsucker (male) 2
This Yellow-bellied Sapsucker has just chiselled three more holes into the bark of this tree, and throughout the day he will revisit them to drink the sap that collects and to eat any insects that are attracted to the sugary liquid. After doing all the hard work, the sapsucker will likely be exploited by other birds in the area, such as hummingbirds and woodpeckers, all wanting to stop in for a quick easy meal! (See my BirdForum Photo Gallery for pictures of the Downy Woodpecker that also visited this tree!)
