Yellow-Crowned Night Heron Display Plumage
I assume this is a male. He was showing off to a prospective partner in another tree.

Habitat
A semi-urban neighborhood, in a tree they nested in last year. About half a mile from a reasonably-sized river.
Location
Central TX.
Scientific name
Nyctanassa violacea
Excellent focus through that tree. Seems like an interesting place for this bird.
It's odd, this tree is half a mile from the nearest permanent water. I've read that night herons nest near or over water, sometimes in colonies, and this spot doesn't fit the bill. This is the only place I've ever seen these, I don't ever see them at the river. Maybe they don't like the cattle egrets living in the best heron-nesting trees?

Amazing focusing and detail in this wonderful behavioural shot.

I love that display and his plumes shooting up all over the place LOL. You did a right grand job of focusing through all the branches too Tired.

A superb picture lad - very well done.
