Hi Galih,
yes, the current EL42s have all four of those coatings.

the major optical difference between the current EL42 and the EL42 Swarovision is in the optical design and not in the coatings.

happy birding

Oh, it's you Mr. Forbes! ^^ ...it's very nice to have Swaro's people to answer that question... ^^

Glad to have you here... :)

Thanks alot Mr. Forbes...and forgive me for my poor English... :)

Cheers

Dale,

I heard last weekend, from a rep from of one the UKs leading optical retailers, that Swarovski had recently upgraded their coatings across the range (inc late mk1 ELs)as part of the introduction of the new ELs. Could this be true?

All that "swaring" is enough to make one "swar!":-O:-O

Sorry about that,

All lenses produced from 2009 onwards have been produced with the new Swarotop coatings. That means that all new ATM scopes, and EL & SLC binoculars have benefited.

btw, Swarotop is the main "Entspiegelung" coating (I suppose that is translated to something like "anti-reflection" coating) used throughout the optic and individually calibrated or "designed" per optical system.
This is done so that each binocular (or scope) has the best possible colour fidelity and transmission. birds shouldnt be this colour :t: or this :C or this ;) (unless of course nature created them that way).

happy birding,

Dale,

I have a chance to buy a nice hardly used 2007 8.5x42 EL. What is the difference in the coatings in the 07 El's and the newer ones (09).

Also on another note is Swarovski planning on discontinuing the current EL line when the new ones come out?

Thanks-Stephen

Hi Stephen.
As mentioned earlier, the new binoculars have the new Swarotop, meaning that their colour fidelity is almost perfect (well ahead of anything else I have seen tested) and the transmission has been improved. This is all the more obvious with the EL42 Swarovision because a drastically improved optical system makes the life of a coatings engineer all the more easier/challenging/rewarding.

Alot of the improvements in the swaro coatings range has happened incrementally and so later models generally tend to be better than earlier ones. the only reason why we are speaking a little more about it in-house is that the clever guys in the next building have really managed to tweak out a really nice step forward with these coatings.

To answer your second question, the EL42 Swarovision will replace the current EL42 next year.

Happy birding,
Dale

Can you, with the help of the fantastic new optical systems of the new EL42, make out in the haze immendiately above the horizon of the world's insecure future any faint trace of a new EL32 :h?:

Thanks Dale,
It's greatly reasurring to have your imput, especially after reading the rumour that a new model was coming out here in the forum and then being laughed at in the binocular shop in Melbourne by the "experts" when I mentioned it. They being of the opinion that the 60th Anniversary 8.5 x 42 had all the latest stuff, so what could be better? etc. I was then shattered when I read the news release about the new model a couple of weeks later. Although talking with the shop manager about Australia's top "tick" birder who uses a 8 x42 Wiess that I thought was a few years old, and he mentioned that if it was an East German one it was most likely better than the newer models. This gave me a bit of hope as i was pretty crestfallen. So re-asking an earlier question, am I correct in understanding that the 60th Anniversary model has all the latest coatings that the new model will have, the difference is in the optics and that my new purchase can hold its head up with the new model?

Dale, thanks for all your useful and cool info on coatings and upgrades done to the 2009 EL.. I am MORE THAN glad I ordered mine a couple of days ago, I bet these current superb EL will be a treasure after the Swarovision come out to the market and EL's discontinued..
I know these binoculars are perfect (almost), but is there any kind of recommendation (about use, care, pros, cons, etc) for a Neotropical birder that is jumping to the higher leagues of binos getting these EL??
cheers from Colombia and THANKS!
Diego.

Dale.

Can you let on, which others were tested?

Patrick, you have a brilliant pair of binoculars. you don't need to worry there. ;)
I am not surprised your local dealer knew nothing about them, as there was no external communication about them up until a few weeks ago.

my two cents of advice: bird as much as you can. you live in colombia! :t: great optics are cool, cool birds are better.
but your swaros are likely to give you lots of happy years with the neotropical birds (my old SLCs sure did).

but here is something that might be useful:
tropical forests make it almost impossible to keep grime off of your lenses (I always had forest fruit pulp, mud, grime and all sorts of things on my lenses). The fancy schmancy external coating will help keep most of the stuff off, but giving your lens a good lick and then wiping them off with a microfibre cloth can really make a difference to the view. Last year I made a short video about lens cleaing in the field.

Happy birding
Dale

Dale... thanks for the advice.. is there any microfiber cloth really worth than others.. I lost mine recently (came with my old Audubon Equinox binos) so would like to get one good as the new Swaros deserve.. any of those cleaning kits sold by Amazon.com?...?
thanks!... and yes, you are right!.. I forecast several years of stunning views of Colombian endemics, specialties and wonderful birds..mmhh, I have a trouble now!: will have to reset my life list because watching the birds with the new Swaros will be another completely different thing!!!...jeje..
saludos, Diego.

Dale,

Thanks for responding to my ? so fast. Besides Swarovski's legendary service, it sure is nice to have a company's top official answer ?'s so promptly on an internet forum like this. I personally think that is outstanding!!
It shows that besides being a great company with a great product; you are showing by your actions, not just lip service, a willingness to respond to your customers questions and needs. I thank you for that.

Sincerely-

Stephen

Dale,

Also adding another ? to the one posted above by end4:

Can you give any insight as to when or if the new Swarovision line is going to extend to the 32mm or... is there going to by any 7x in the future? -like a 7x32- or maybe even a 7x36- either one to me would be the bees knees!

Thanks again--Stephen

Hi Stephen. there are many reasons why I like the company (and have since my student days). I spend time on birdforum and other birding/digiscoping/photography/nature forums simply because I love nature. some times I have more time to do so. and other times not. it is mostly at night though (or during a lunch or "smoke" break) so I will not always be able to answer questions quickly (or even be aware of them). also, what I say is mostly a combination of my opinion and what I have managed to find out from the clever guys that wander the corridors. i do this out of my own curiosity to know the answer, and because I'd like to help as much as possible.:t: but if there is an "official position" to be posted then that will almost certainly come from someone else.

As for staring in to the future, if it hasn't been announced officially somewhere (like on the website) then I am very very unlikely to comment on it. that would be a sure-fire way of getting the bosses rather upset with me. and then I will be back to playing with birds (as opposed to helping to build great toys to play with birds)

happy birding,
dale

Dale,

Thanks again for the response!

I certainly understand why you can not report on future developments; and it was probably unfair of me to ask you. I am sure the company has a time frame for any possible future additions or alterations to the line.

By your actions though, you are showing the company's willingness to listen and respond to your customers.

Thank You

Stephen

It is known that in 2010, exactly when it begins a new series of Swarovski EL series?
It would be nice if spring would bring the binoculars to the bunny. |=)|
