That looks a good vid but would love to see your stuff uploaded in HD

Hi peteh,

My problem seems to be exporting video from my macbook, which is 2008 model(Mac OS X, 2.1 GHz with 2 GB 667 MHz). The iMovie'08 program is automatically downsizing the footage and gives me no option to download hd footage, best I can get is "large".

Not sure if there is a way around this. On the macbook before export the footage looks great....

Any help appreciated from anyone with a solution...

Great stuff!
Really enjoyed watching that. I like how you put it all together too. Makes me want to try something like that now! :)
Real shame you cant get the contrast dialed back like you can on the Canons though.

I haven't done much videoing recently but today we spotted a group of Manx Shearwaters feeding just offshore. They were too far away for photography though so i stacked both Tcs and had a go videoing them instead. I wish I had a nice fluid video head for this sort of thing instead of a wimberly but its come out ok I think. (even with trying to pan into the strong wind! haha)

I was fascinated by the thought that the film put together by that amateur filmaker on tonight's Springwatch was done using a Canon DSLR (7D?) with a 400mm L lens (not for the macro work though obviously). Just shows what can be achieved with it. I'm prepared to finally withdraw my negative stance towards video being featured on DSLR's.

A question I have (without wishing to read back through all the pages, lazy of me I know) in terms of video would there be any difference at all to the quality of the video between something expensive like a 7D and the consumer models like the 550D which also have 1080?

I am a bit skeptical all of that was shot on a dslr to be honest. Some of it looked like a proper video camera to me.
As for the differences in dslr videos. I'm not 100% sure on this but I think the 600d level doesn't have 720p50. But I am assuming the video quality is the same.

I agree the film looked a bit to good foe a DSLR and a 400 5.6? min focus with that lens and the way it was done. Maybe someone can prove us wrong who has this set up.

First attempt

Hi All, here is my first attempt at making a short film from 7d video clips all taken in the same day at the same place in Hampshire.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B9HJsY_hLrQ

It is a bit shaky in places due to the wind and I have added some of the sound since the wind noise was awful. I have become sufficiently keen on taking video with my 7D that I would like to do something about that. My apologies but rather than read through this whole thread could someone suggest a good but ideally inexpensive mic that I can attach to the hot shoe. I assume it would also need a fluffy windjammer too.

Thanks for your help, please do feel free to pm me if this will be clogging up this thread with stuff that been previously covered.

Cheers

rode mic

Not to bad at all given the very windy conditions, Rode video mic works well might be worth looking at .

Thanks for this, that's the one i have read about before probably on here. However i have purchased it and have a problem. In he first few videos i have shot with it it is picking up distant sound very nicely but the whole recording is overshadowed by a hissing sound which frankly is worse than the wind noise i was trying to irradiate. There are some adjustments inside the battery compartment which could perhaps sort this and i will read the manual later on, but in the meantime has anyone else had the same issue with the Rode Video mic on a 7d and if so is there a quick fix?

I can remove it to some extent in software, but i was rather hoping to just have good audio with no fiddling.

Cheers in advance

ah if you have the mic mounted on your 7d then it is most likely the IS of the lens, i use a cable so dont have this problem. (eddit ) i also have a sock over the mic to cut wind noise, easy to make out of fluffy type materiel and a couple of elastic bands hold it in place.

No not that i am afraid, i have a windjammer fitted and it wasn't windy plus its a constant hissing noise. Set-up mounted on a tripod with a non-IS lens. Is my mic faulty?

you may have to play with the settings, my on /off switch is always set to on = the flat filter, and the pad in the battery compartment both are zero .

Hi Rob

I think this sound could be generated by the 7d. Do your recording have any kind of background hiss, i can remove the hiss from mine in software but would rather not have to. If you use a cable were is your mic mounted?

Thanks

Thats great info Rob cheers.
Im sure many people will be coming up against this exact same problem with the sound.

Not at all, in fact I use my "THIRTY" year old flash bracket.

Easy to get on ebay similar to this

Just add to this i have done some test and the noise is related to the Rode mic. It doesn't matter how far away I move it from the 7d it is still present, just a dull background hiss that you don't get from the internal mic. I guess it is something normal that you guys are all used to and that i will have to get used to. It is easily removed in software, but i was hoping that the purchase of an external mic would cut out wind noise and avoid me having to do anything.

I have recently added another video to my page featuring a local Little Owl. All video taken on the 7d sound via the rode mic with the hiss filtered out.
