Hard to be certain from this where you're coming from--Sibley too hard on tape luring or too soft? Me, I think he has it about right.

This is not a matter of being righteous.... This taping issue is one that has been debated on our forum often.... And some birders do abuse it... Yet realty speaks that technology is here and you can't deny it...so it is a matter of working with it.

I applaud someone of Sibley's expertise level and knowledge who stands up and makes a Stance..... He knows that recordings will be used and offers a practical guide to include in his books (hopefully) as a preface to best birding practices. That way he helps others by Educating them. If a person unwillingly does something overly abusive in regards to luring via recordings.... That is one thing.... But to first provide education , knowledge and best practice.... Is what is needed to prevent abuse.

David Sibley is an occasional poster on BF but I'm sure he won't reply to this nonsense. I don't care if he's made 5 million or 50 million bucks - he's written a very balanced piece which helps educate all of us; or, at least, those of us who appreciate education.

The article should form the basis for a code of conduct Worldwide and a version should be printed in every field guide & tour brochure forthwith.

I was once birding on a piece of land that was never ceded to the
Canadian government. Two Native Americans came along in their
pickup truck, one with a rifle standing on the back of the truck.

I guess I should of explained the code of conduct to them about spooking
the migrating birds, but instead I chose to leave.

doing about this:

"On October 11, members of the Administrative Regulations Review Subcommittee voted unanimously, by a 7 to 0 vote, to approve a plan to allow sandhill crane hunting in the Bluegrass State. With this final approval, Kentucky will join thirteen other states in which sandhill cranes can be properly and scientifically managed through hunting."

Mr Sibley a bit rediscovered the wheel here. Similar articles were in Britain several decades ago.

It depends how you want to read the article. I read it as an educational rather than a beating of drums piece.

I tape lure and thought louder was better! The national parc guidelines for woodpecker prospecting is play for ten minutes solid then move on. So to read this will hopefully improve my field skills next spring....

Also included was clear reference to previous articles so Sibley isn't necessarily claiming full credit for inventing 'the wheel'.

Can be, but what is wrong with it to bring it people back in mind? While Sibley tells that this technique works at the best during breeding time, our (European Union law), tells us:

Article 5
[...] a general system of protection for all species of birds referred to in Article 1, prohibiting in particular:
[...]
(d) deliberate disturbance of these birds particularly during the period of breeding and rearing, in so far as disturbance would be significant having regard to the objectives of this Directive;

The directive is talking about significant disturbance. I'm not sure that tape luring would fall into this category...

Given that playback can be increasingly done on the mobile phones most people are starting to own, the situation is probably a hell of a lot more pertinent than it was several decades ago.

North America does have it's own code of ethics, one the ABA compiled. A code I always assumed to be non controversial?

The ABA Principles of Birding Ethics includes the following statement on luring:

"Limit the use of recordings and other methods of
attracting birds, and never use such methods in
heavily birded areas or for attracting any species that
is Threatened, Endangered, or of Special Concern, or
is rare in your local area."

I have attached a copy of the complete ABA Principles of Birding Ethics if anyone is interested.

I agree that there is certainly more potential for abuse now with the ready availability of bird songs to everyone.

Just because it has been said before doesn't mean that it never needs to be discussed again. I think that Sibley's piece was well balanced and as fugl said in the original post, food for thought.

If you don't think twice before using recordings or pishing to lure out a bird maybe this will encourage you (and me) to do so.
