Buckenham Marshes

Visited Buckenham Marshes this evening. No sign of the Caspian Tern but it didn't tern out all bad. There was an interesting mix of birds including 1 Greenshank, 1 Turnstone, 6 Ruff, 2 Barn Owls, 1 Avocet, 1, 4 Little Egret, 1 Shelduck family and a flyover Curlew.

Nice one Steve, not seen a Turnstone there myself yet! Looks like more waders are beginning to pass through

Excellent Steve. Had a Turnstone there on Thursday evening just after seeing the Caspian.

At Strumpshaw on Sunday, we discovered that there is a smart new bench overlooking the meadow on the pump trail. It should be a great place to sit when the Hobbies or Barn Owls are about. You can tell things are a little quiet when a bench was the most exciting find of the day.

Actually, I sat there for ten minutes on Thursday and saw a Barn Owl, a Buzzard and a Hobby! So spot on, Ron!

Came across a juv Wheatear at Salthouse during the week (with no sign of any adults). Just wondered how far juvs would travel from their breeding areas at this time of year? Any thoughts?

Also came across the nine Spoonbills there and put them on the pager, as no-one else seemed to have done

On such a quiet birding day, I would have thought that Silver-washed Frits might have made it onto the pager as well and would have been a nice break from packing (which also means that I won't have an opportunity to go and look for them for the next few weeks - oh well!)

Don't know who found them originally, but they weren't there when I looked!!!!! I spent a long time looking. They were seen in the ride off to your left before you park in the carpark and also one was seen by the pond. Good luck. I'm sure they will re-appear tomorrow when I am at work!

Due to all the summer rain, the pools at Buckenham are looking good to entice in a wide range of waders this year. Hopefully, even a scarce wader or two may turn up. Although, I suspect the ground nesting birds have not fared well this year.

It certainly looked wetter than last year, a good sign for the coming weeks.

On a side note, C30 Lapwing at Kelling Water Meadows on Friday of mixed ages. Little else to shout about though.

Juveniles can disperse quite widely from the natal site and don't necessarily migrate at the same time as adults. There are quite a few scattered Norfolk pairs, more (or there were more) in Suffolk & Essex, but there's a healthy population in the Netherlands.

Today's highlights

Roseate tern - adult on fresh marsh 09:00-11:00 only
Arctic tern - 1 briefly on fresh marsh (increase in sterna terns around the reserve today)
Spotted redshank - 19 on fresh marsh
Dunlin - 15 on fresh marsh
Greenshank - 11 on saltmarsh
Med gull - 2 offshore
Little gull - 1 on tidal pool
Hobby - 1 west

Glad to hear the peewits have done well. Does anyone know how many pairs of Lapwings and other waders are breeding/bred on the site this year?
