I will be heading soon to Dahab and intend to visit Ras al Mohammed and Nabq.

1. Where is the best site for Sooty Falcon at Ras al Mohammed? From where to look for migrant raptors there?

2. Where to go at Nabq? Main targets there are Sooty Gull, Terns and maybe waders.

Best regards!
Adrian

I've done a report on Dahab in the vacation section.[its still on the first page]
The sewage works at Dahab are excellent apart from the smell!
Teeming with birds every time I went.We stayed at the Happy Life Hotel and I saw quite a lot around the hotel grounds and walking along the coast and Wadi Qunai.

Thanks pratincol! I will check the sewage ponds daily.
You won't be disappointed apart from the bad smells!
Its like an oasis attracting lots of birds.
Be careful as you go over the top of the embankments.
The best way to approach it is from the white brick buiding area to the north end.Just gently go up the slope so you are between the two larger pools.I managed not to disturb the birds that way.
The coast between the Happy Life Hotel and the Mercure is worth checking out .There is litle disturbance here and a huge rough area with some birds.
Lets know what you find
Cheers!

Wich one are the ponds you visited? In Google earth I could find smaller ponds west of the hotel complex in Laguna and bigger ones further north just west of town.

They are easy to find.
There is a main road going north to south skirting the shopping area of Dahab town centre.
Halfway along the road there is a mosque and a large car parking area. The car park is used by coaches droppping people off to enter the shopping area.
The pools are easily seen from the car park. There is a raised area with some tall green grass and reeds growing.
You simply walk about 200 metres to the pools from the car park across some very rough ground.
So they are not the pools near the laguna area.
If you are still unsure please send a posting
All the best

Thanks a lot! I'll find them and will post of course an update of what I saw there.

I will be interested to know what you find.
Look out for the Marsh Terns.I found a juvenile Whiskered Tern there.
Try the Happy Life to Mercure area. You can reach this by getting a taxi to the Happy Life hotel. From the hotel entrance you will see the large expanse of wasteland leading to the coast. There was a Green Heron along here as well as Caspian Tern,Yellow Legged Gull,Isabelline Wheatear,Common Kingfisher,Common Sandpiper and generally some Shrikes.
Also check out the line of trees on the border of the Happy Life and the land leading south along the coast. There were always birds around here icluding a Rose Coloured Starling,Rock Martin,Beeater and Spotted Flycatcher and Shrikes.
There are Pied and Hooded Wheatears around here as well.

Here is a short report about a very successfull week (2.-9.10.2012) in South Sinai, mainly at Dahab, with one daytrip to Ras Mohamed and Nabq.

There were many migrants around Dahab, especially in the hotel grounds of the Ibis Styles Lagoona hotel. This must be for sure the best migrant-trap in Dahab.

Dahab Ibis Styls Lagoona hotel:
Sooty Falcon 1 adult (in flight over beach)
Greater Sand Plover up to 5
White-cheeked Tern up to 10 early morning
Lesser-crested Tern 1
Slender-billed Gull up to 40
Levant Sparrowhawk 1
Citrine Wagtail 1y
Richards Pipit 3 on 2 days on football pitch
Rt-Pipit up to 50
Hooded Wheatear 1
Masked Shrike 3 (on several days)
Sardinian Warbler 1
Sedge Warbler 1
Common Rosefinch 1y

Dahab Sewage works:
Ferruginous Duck 1 male
Glossy Ibis 2
Wiskered Tern up to 6
Marsh Sand 2
Little Stint 1
Dunlin 5
Pied Kingfisher 1

Blue hole - Ras Abu Galum:
Striated Heron 1
Blackstart 2
White-crowned Wheatear 1
Hooded Wheatear 1

Nabq:
Sooty Gull 2
White-eyed Gull 20
LC Tern 3
Striated Heron 10
many waders north of ship wreck (looks good for Terek...)

Thanks for the report.Interested in the finding of 6 Whiskered Tern there.I saw one which was a lifer for me.
What about all the Coot and Litle Grebe? It was covered with them when I went.
I suspect a lot of the hotels would be potential migrant traps around that time of year.I would like to return to the Happy Life hotel around March and October which has a lot of trees and shrubs to attract passing birds.

There were plenty of Coots, Teals, Little Grebes, ... . Migrants could be seen in every patch of green around town, but the Ibis styles (known as the Coralia in the past) has by far the largest area of very well watered lawns and bushes in the whole area, there is even a football pitch. Check it out on Google Earth.
