Apparently the waxwings can be seen in the trees on Saxon Way in Jarrow. Checking it out tomorrow morning followed by the ibis which were reported near the East Boldon dog torture track. Anyone have more info on those?

Clara Vale

A few shots of the Kingfisher (and one of a Heron with a fish) from Clara Vale today. It's amazing what a little bit of light can do. In the second shot of the Kingfisher the branch was moving all over the place but the Kingfisher managed to keep its head dead still.

Waxwings in Jarrow

Following Ray Scott's kind tip-off, I found the waxwings this morning. The sun and the light didn't make photography easy! Quite a number of folk were out in Saxon Way, near Bede's World.

I didn't think their colour was as bright as usual. Here are some shots I did get..........

Nice to see a few familiar faces around Saxon Way just before lunchtime - plenty of photo opportunities as the Waxwings kept dropping from the taller trees to the Rowan Trees to feed on the yellow berries - plenty of Redwing and Mistle Thrush accompanying and harassing them respectively..

Nice to see the Waxwings giving a good show today at Jarrow as June and Derek have said.
Shame the trees they were feeding in are well shaded by the houses making it hard to get decent shots, although it doesn't stop some people getting them;).

June and Derek posted the Waxwings here's a couple of other species.

Waxwings

Beautiful captures! The sun and the shadows made things a bit tricky!
I kept asking folk if they were BF and met one, but clearly there were others too.

We used to have some great BF bird bashes!

Couple of my Waxwing shots.
In the first shot one of the waxwings kept hopping around trying to feed the other. Do they often do this?

A couple of shots from Hartlepool area today:

The Headland: 2 guillemot seen, but alas one was dead, beside the lifeboat pier, also a couple of dead gulls. Others were eider, shags, cormorants, a flock of knot and the usual turnstones, oystercatchers etc.

Newburn Bridge: 2 med, gulls also a young seal was on the sea defence rocks, just over the wall from the car park, at first we thought it was dead, until it moved. I did phone the RSPCA, and they assured me that it should be O.K. and that they would contact someone to come out to make sure.

Ward Jackson Park: 9 parakeets, pochard, fem goosander as well as the usual stuff.

Ron,
The fifth photo shows a bird remarkably reminiscent of a Nutcracker.
The spot pattern is quite different.

I had one in the garden some years ago, but this species isn't often seen or reported.

Hi June,

Number 5 is a Starling. Nutcracker are exceptionally rare, I may be corrected by others but I'm not sure if there are any records in either Northumberland or Durham, birdguides certainly suggests not.

Nutcracker

This is years ago, Chris, and I did report it and send in a photograph. I was given to understand that it was accepted.
