Red Kites

2 red kites investigating something at the end of my garden about 3.00pm
rooks mobbing them . Headed south towards Hingham

Corn bunting on bird feeder just after.

Red kite

While with the family today, chasing the monkeys around at Thrigby hall I had a Red kite pass over along with 5 corvids.
Great bird to see along with the plastic storks and cranes on the ground ;-)
Happy birding, shaky ;-)

Red Kite all over the shop!

Brammer- what a bird to have on your feeder!

Spent the early part of the morning at Hardley Flood. Going to make this a more frequent trip this year. Nothing too exciting today, although a nice variety including Curlew, Pintail, Kingfisher and Little Egret.

Back on the patch this evening, a stunning sky and a movement of Thrushes overhead was notable in the garden. Full update on my blog as always.

Cheers,
Jim.

Flock of Redwings 50+ just south of Burnham Market. Short-eared Owl, Spoonbill, Stonechat at Burnham Overy Dunes & Gun Hill. Skylarks singing – a spectacular afternoon.:t:

Full update on blog.

Had a really nice day at Strumpshaw on Sunday. Got 8 snipe on the spit in the scrape overlooked by the Tower hide which was nice. Watching the shovellers, black-headed gulls and marsh harriers displaying with a spectacular sunset to finish was good.

Anyone know anything about this?

It's the first I've heard of it.

Same here, but thanks for flagging it up. If as is suggested, there has not been a planning application for this, then the relevant authorities should be made aware. Also there may be a restriction to the days that shooting is taking place then ideally this should be monitored and recorded where practical. (I think its the same as car boot sales, up to 28 days a year - doesn't require permissions, but it could have changed).

Different topic - the East Bank at Cley Marshes is being repaired today by contractors on behalf of the E.A.

This is a syndicate of Italian shooters that have been causing problems at several sites along the River Wavenly \ Chet and Yare valleys. They have no regard for local planning restrictions or the law and have been seen using illegal shooting methods, i.e. semi automatic shotguns with a capacity of more than 3 cartridges (the law limits this to 3) using electronic wildfowl calls again against the law. On one of their sites they dug through the river wall to flood their marsh and amazingly as yet they have not been prosecuted. Maybe big money encourages those who should be looking into this to look the other way. I have nothing against duck shooting and enjoy a duck for Sunday roast, but these guys could be real problem.

Just for general info, the illegal use of guns can be reported to the Police non-emergency number, 101.

I've passed on the info about the Burgh Castle reasons for the petition to the RSPB Wildlife Crimes Unit.

Which authorities need to be aware of this behaviour? A few emails and phone calls to the relevant body and perhaps we would see some action?

Jim.

There used to be a contact number for Operation Compass, a wildlife crime investigation team. Is this unit still operational and contactable?
