A couple of very nice shots Dave :t: That 300/2.8 IS MkII is a mega good lens especially when coupled with the 1.4x tc MkIII, looks like the combo works well with the 7D2.

The battery is continuing to perform well on its 4th charge. Another 364 shots today, bringing the total to 901 with 23% left.
The cloudless sky (at last) and good light for the time of year highlighted another problem that others have complained of, but I couldn't be certain until I had a suitable subject in the right conditions.
This subject behaved impeccably against a clear background with good contrast (the same couldn't be said of the numerous grouse). It wasn't moving quickly and it was easy to hold in the focus point (single point) with rear-focussing and AI Servo, yet I found I was losing focus on consecutive images, either single shots or part of a burst.
Particularly annoying given the subject.
Something else I'll be keeping an eye on. I'll run a tripod test, maybe tomorrow to rule out a wobbly hand.

No problems with losing focus in the field today, either on the tripod or hand-held.
The shot below is a quick-reaction shot taken hand-held on spot focus as the oystercatcher went by. It's the second in a sequence of three and the other two are just the same.
I put yesterday's problems down to tired arms brought about by a lot of shots of a bird loitering overhead for an extended period and creeping age.
Looking good.

Today i tried out the 7D ii with the 300mm f2.8 ii with converters for the first time - in bad light - and put a few images on my Flickr photostream:

I haven't done any AF micro adjustments and all the combinations seem to be sharp enough to me. The set up seems very light when compared with the 500mm.

I've been looking at upgrading my 600d because I feel I'm missing key shots due to the low fps. I was going to go all out at get the mk2, but I've been offered a 7d for £260. Would this be a better purchase for me, I've only been fiddling around with cameras for the last 18 months.

The 7D is a great birding camera, and for £260 very good value - much cheaper than 7D ii of course. I'd be very tempted by the 7D offer if I was in your position. You can always get a 7D ii at a later date, if and when you want to.

The image quality would be just about the same - same sensor and same class and generation of image processor. But the other features offered by the 7D completely outclass the 600D, except that you lose the flip screen.

I would agree with the others, the 7D looks like a great buy. £260 might be the value a dealer might have put on it as a trade in. Do you know its history? Don't touch it if it needs any repairs. They would cost a fortune and make it an expensive camera. Check that the sensor is clean and unmarked. Probably the best way to check is to shoot off a few frames against an overcast sky and to check the images on your pc for dust spots, marks and scratches. Also worth shooting off some frames a range of shutter speeds. Any unevenness in exposure top to bottom would indicate shutter lag and a problem. The mirror does not need any big thumb prints on it either. My 7D has served me for the past five and a half years being dragged up and down crags, though bogs and salt marshes. Its only broken down a couple of times when bounced off rocks. It's shortly being put out to grass, quite literally, I intend to use for camera trapping. Looking at all of the dents chips and scratches on it, I just don't think that I would get a quote of £260 for it.

I have now tried out my buddies 7d2. The results are amazing. Super sharp. AF tracking immense.
There are clearly some duff focusers. Several people have contacted me having returned them with a similar story.
I will probably hold off now until the bad eggs are weeded out or Canon work out which ones are duff. Though I doubt they would admit it.

Good News there Marcus and I think it's wise to hang back untill Lemons are well and truly sorted from the good ones.
Waited a couple of years for 7d2 to arrive so what's another six month or so.
Problem seems to be world wide too as I have spoken to at least two birders out in Singapore who are not happy with their models and have reverted back to using there 1d MK 4 stating that the 7d2 shots are on the soft side.
A few selling for £800 ish out in those parts with only about 500 clicks on them but what's the use of buying one if it's no good.I think this will also put off those buying grey imports as if you end up with one of the lemons you will have a right chow-on trying to replace it or get refund etc.
Looks like my 7d lifespan is going to be extended and at least I know that I can get a few good shots from it most of the time just a shame high ISO is not an option.
Here's hoping that Canon can get the 7d2 sorted soon as I am sure they can see that they are not selling like hot cakes as they would have expected with an eagerly awaited body.

ISO a bit high for a couple due to user error, but it's fair to say I'm delighted with the camera.
My advice to anyone wanting to get one would be to go for it - life is too short not to. If they bought a faulty one, I'd suggest they take it back and swap for it for another, just as you would with any faulty goods.
Just waiting for a rarity to turn up so I can use the GPS to prove where the photo was taken! There is a reasonable chance that the 7D iii will be out before then.

Half an hour at the river just before lunch this morning. A time when Chelsea were still unbeaten in the league this season.
