New Nikon 300mm f/4 VR (1 Viewer)

With only the 300 mm on the D810 you have the ability for large crops.
I'm still finding it a wonderful lens for just walking around.

Thanks micloi and Neil for sharing lots of great examples.

From everything I'm seeing it is a really nice lens. Someday I may sell my 300 f/4D and get the new lens. But I'm not rushing. I'm just not that impressed with Nikon these days... Lots of little things that maybe don't add up to much. For example, I cannot fathom why this great new lens is still pretty much in a "preorder" status... Not that I'm ready to order anyway, but Jeeze, Nikon! What the f&@# is going on??

Dave

PS. I just saw on Amazon it says it will be In Stock on July 18.

I'm still #28 of about 50 on the pre-order waiting list for this lens in one of the major photo stores in Canada (Henry's). They still don't know when I'm likely to get one.

More macro shots with the TC-17e

Here are a few first shots taken in Colorado last week, using the 300mm PF and my D7100.

The images have been cropped, but not processed in any other way.

For the flight shots I was using dynamic 21 point AF. I felt that the AF was fast and accurate (it is also very quiet).

Best wishes,

Dave

These were taken with the 300mm PF and Nikon 1.4 TC.

They have been cropped but are otherwise unedited.

Terns are starting to arrive in Hong Kong waters for the nesting season ( Black-naped,Bridled and Rosiettes). So I've had the TC 14E 111 on the 300PF most of the week. Not only good for birds.
Neil.

I like the Night Heron in flight, Neil. Actually both Night Heron images where the bird is holding the fish.

Got an email from B&H: it'll be another three months at least before they ship my lens. It was supposed to be a Father's day gift (June) then a birthday gift (yesterday) and it looks like it may be a Halloween gift now. Rats!

After months of waiting - and taking the time to sell my 80-400 AF-S to fund it - I managed to get a 300mm f/4E PF from Best Buy's eBay site. They get a few in stock every few days, and offer in-store returns, so at the moment they seem to be one of the more definite avenues for getting this hard to find lens. Unlike the specimen I rented a month ago, the one I bought doesn't have any VR issues, and is nice and sharp at 300mm. It also does very well with the TC-17E II, and with the Kenko Teleplus PRO DGX 1.4x teleconverter. One quirk with the Kenko is that, for unknown reasons, it makes the lens's VR emit a loud whining sound when in use, although it seems to work without any other issues.

The attached shots are with the 300mm f/4E PF and the Nikon D5500. It also works very nicely with the D810, and is much lighter and more portable than the 150-600 lenses or the 80-400 AF-S.

Some shots with the D810, 300mm f/4E, and the TC-17E II. These are all close to wide open at f/7.1; I find that f/8 yields peak sharpness. AF performance is very good even with the TC-17E mounted. All in all very glad I got this lens; its weight and size make it much easier to carry around and cram into small bags than even the 80-400!

Finally got one!

I have had it for 4 days now, and have had several chances to use it with the TCE-14ll, hand-held. It's light, sharp and so far excellent. i had to take the decision to trade in my Tamron 150-600, but I think it was a good decision. Here are a few --

Nice photos. Looks like good light at your end too.
Neil.
