First summer Red-footed Falcon reported on wires by road at Chatterley Valley (apparently photographed)

Yes, I must admit I was expecting to see nowt when I rocked up this morning at 7am !!! when I saw it sitting in there in the field I couldn't believe my eyes :eek!:

Turned up at 15:30 today and it was showing exceptionally well, wasn't expecting views like that! I hope it's there tomorrow for everyone.

I understand the RFF was first seen and photographed by a non-birder who put the picture on-line to try and find an ID. I think a big thank you is in order for them having the presence of mind to put the picture out and not just look in a field guide, thus giving us all the chance to see this little beauty!

Red-footed Falcon - still at entrance to Chatterley Whitfield Colliery also juv Black Redstart still

Even trumping the RFF in the rarity stakes was the first ever Staffs breeding record of Wigeon at Belvide - female and a single chick along the dam. Amazing record. See Belvide Blog for a photo.

Popped over to see the Falcon again today on my lunch break, once again giving outstanding views. It even had a duel with a passing Kestrel which pleased the crowd.

great blog Archie, but my understanding from someone who was there on the 12th is that the locusts were not to do with photographers - and the only time the bird pulled out of a sortie was when the bloke's 10 year old son threw a locust within 10 feet of 75 birders...

1s male Red-footed Falcon & 1s Black Redstart - Chatterley Whitfield Colliery still
14 drake Common Scoter - Belvide until 09.15 then flew off then 8 drakes, presumably different birds, in the afternoon
4 drake Common Scoter - Ryder's Mere until 8.25pm then flew north

Attempted to get to the Falcon but Friday on the M6 with 2 lorries crashing meant I almost got there but ran out of time and had to get off to work....oh well there's always another life time I suppose.
