Robins are flycatchers? (1 Viewer)

Clement & Rose 2015

Clement & Rose 2015. Robins and Chats. Christopher Helm.

The amazon preview includes the table of contents, revealing the scope of coverage and species-level taxonomy.
Having received my copy, a few immediate (very minor) observations concerning Holarctic species (particularly where there has been recent disagreement)…

  • Eastern Bluebird Sialia sialis: bermudensis and grata are recognised as valid sspp.

  • White-browed Shortwing Brachypteryx montana: "considerable vocal differences between races, necessitating detailed review of all taxa (Alström & Eaton in prep.)."

  • European Robin Erithacus rubecula: valens is recognised as a valid ssp, but not marionae.

  • Bluethroat Luscinia svecica: azuricollis is recognised as a valid ssp.

  • Siberian Blue Robin Larvivora cyane: bochaiensis is recognised as a valid ssp, but not nechaevi.

  • Rufous Scrub Robin Cercotrichas galactotes: no mention of possible species status for 'African Scrub Robin' C (g) minor (incl hamertoni), as long recognised by eBird/Clements (but not by any other mainstream sources). But "Race hamertoni considered by some authorities as a separate species".

  • Grandala Grandala coelicolor: "A yet unpublished study (Alström et al. submitted) suggests that the Asian Grandala is closely related to the North American bluebirds".

  • Canary Islands Chat Saxicola dacotiae: treated as monotypic.

  • Common Stonechat Saxicola torquatus: European/Siberian/African groups discussed, but not treated as distinct spp.

  • Arabian Wheatear Oenanthe lugentoides: boscaweni is recognised as a valid ssp.

  • Variable Wheatear Oenanthe picata: capistrata and opistholeuca are recognised as valid sspp (not colour morphs).
First impressions are that the Taxonomy sections in the species accounts are commendably detailed and comprehensive.

Cheers Richard. I hope to receive my copy later today or tomorrow. I was wondering whether stejnegeri receives a proper treatment?

Stejneger's Stonechat

I was wondering whether stejnegeri receives a proper treatment?
Marcel, the Common Stonechat plates (1½ plates, 22 examples) include a first-year male stejnegeri, and the species account (19½ pages, 11 photos) includes photos of an adult male and an adult female. Zink et al's (2009) findings are discussed, but stejnegeri is treated as a member of the maurus group pending "a comprehensive molecular analysis of the entire complex".

Cheers. Got my copy just now. Looks fantastic!

PS. Doesn't seem to have been published online by ScienceDirect, yet...

Unquestionable. Mol. Phylogenet. Evol. has never been a very good support for nomenclature, unfortunately.
The names can still be changed, however. (Maybe this is why the work is not online...?)

A bit worryingly, the work doesn't currently seem to appear as registered in ZooBank... Or is it just not yet publicly visible?

I was anyway surprised that the authors would have chosen to publish in this journal, considering its track record of rather poor (and poorly-reviewed) papers on taxonomic topics.

PS. Just noticed that the Editor-in-Chief is Antonio Arnaiz-Villena, lead author of several papers published in the journal; and Wink is Regional Editor...

Yes, but the registration was presumably done by the authors, and would be independent from their journal choice. As the journal is online-only, if the registration is not there, the name doesn't exist.

Appreciate and concur with the absolutely valid concerns; but please find on page 41 the ZooBank registration numbers.
Seen that, but the [work] registration number produces a blank page on ZooBank, and the [act] registration number yields: 404 - Not Found.
I don't know the reason, nor do I make assumptions about it; just reporting what I see.

Saw just yesterday that the paper was out, so I still had to edit the preliminary form at ZooBank (filled in when I did not yet know the pagination, date of publication etc.). Hopefully, you'll find it to be in good order now.

Grateful for the keen and sharp eyes of this community.
