Anyone still using [i am]?

Thoughts please on alternatives with the same functionality? GPS, iOS app, checklists by location.

Take a look at ebird.org which very easily can be combined with scythebill for you to have a local copy. Whether you want something more advanced regarding GPS is a question you have to decide.

I am using Bird Journal and I'm still quite happy with it. Having said that, the long- awaited and promised update of the IOC taxonomy is of some concern to me. I do hope it is not a sign of declining interest in maintaining the software.

That’s pretty much where I am Peter. I’m wondering if moving to eBird (say) is the way to protect my data and to ensure I’m up to date.

I use Bird Journal, although for me not perfect (mainly in the analysis side), it does what I need in the field. Also there is the ability to record other types of creatures, butterflies etc is also important for me.

Hi all,

Yes, still using Bird Journal (since 2011). It's the only software that I've come across which allows me to link images to records, and more importantly, non avian taxa. In a typical year I carry out a decent number of invertebrate and botanical surveys, and I find the aspect of using multiple taxa and multiple lists very useful indeed.

In the field are you using eBird app and then download from computer regularly to Scythebill?

What is the extra that the Scythebill stage gives you?

Hi all

I agree that Bird Journal is great in so many ways. I’m just a little concerned at what it’s future is. The IOC update is just one example. Understandably, the owner/programmer is limited in human resources but we pay for a “premium” service.

Following your initial post I’ve looked at the Birdjournal website and seen the requests and replies, particularly on the IOC update. I can see the perception/ cause for concern coming from the replies. Having an approximate date would at least give us something rather than an open ended statement.

I do hope that Birdjournal continues, and goes from strength to strength, as it’s the best package for me. I do duplicate recording (as I put my bird sightings into Birdtrack, through the export/ upload functions, and all sightings into IRecord) but nothing gives me same detail of different taxa, location data, ease of use with the app and analytics.

Ebird is locked into Clements taxonomy, Scythebill has both that and IOC. Scythebill gives some options not included in ebird. And yes, I use the app in the field and download data to the pc for import to Scythebill

Well bird journal does appear to be dead. They gave the excuse of a subscription fee to add enhancements and develope the software, etc. It cannot be hard to update the IOC. They just are not delivering on their promises.

Has anyone experimented with exporting their database into another? It looks very limited and perhaps designed that way. Exporting to ebird format you loose all your custom added field data. Bird Journal format, well you need to be a programmer to parse it together.
