Hi All!
This one has been driving me crazy, I've been looking all over for some kind of answer. I live in the Logan Square neighborhood of Chicago in an apartment. I've added a couple of bird feeders and get the usual ones: starlings, sparrows, etc. I grew up in rural Michigan so I can identify many by look and some by call.
That said, I've been hearing a bird late at night over the past couple of weeks (May/June) that I've never heard before. Its call is a short, high burst followed by what I can only describe as a throaty frog call. The first part sounds fairly standard, but the second part sounds like if you had a small stone inside of a large rubber ball and shook the ball. It isn't stationary, the sound moves around my building. The second part of the call is loud enough that I can hear it echo off the buildings near me. I have windows on the north and south and I hear it on both sides. I've never seen it at the feeder, I sat in the dark one night to see if it would land so I could get a look but it never did. I've never heard it during the day.
Any information at all would be great. I understand too that this may be a bat of some kind. At this point I'm leaning toward a cheeky mockingbird but I have no clue. Thanks in advance!
