Nikon refurbished optics at deep discount (1 Viewer)

Nikon has announced a sale on optics that have been "refurbished" which often means sold and returned and so under US law cannot be sold as new a second time.

One example, Nikon Monarch HG 10x42 binos selling for $500

Nice find, I also looked through the list and the biggest bargain is the one mentioned the MHG 10x42.

This binocular is very good, and for many users can be a one and done.

Great prices....too bad I already bought an HG but nice prices. I wonder when they mean refurbished if they really were or just given a casual view....

If that 8x42HG were $499 like the 10x I'd snag it. I'm looking for a high quality non alpha 8x42.

I think you might have to go further to see the $499 price.

Refurbished means that Nikon did some repairs and it comes with a 90 day warranty. If you buy a refurbished product from Nikon directly, they will take care of you down the road, however if you buy it elsewhere, you are on your own.
I would only buy a refurbished glass directly from Nikon, not elsewhere.

I see the 10x42 MHG at $699, no matter how I try to look at the listings or drilling down to the product itself - perhaps there was an error in pricing that has been amended?

It is long gone, it was at $499 last night, I knew it would not last long. When things come up for sale like this on the Nikon website, they go fast, I check it frequently.

About 15 years ago I picked up a refurbished Nikon 10x35 EII at High-Point Optics in Northern NJ for about 250.00. They had a box of about a ten of them that I could chose from. (Edit: It's name "High Point Scientific.")

I have used mine without any problems since I purchased it.

That went fast! I actually tried to add it to my cart a few minutes after my prior post and it was already gone.

I'm seeing conflicting info about Nikon's refurbished warranty and how it applies to sport optics since they changed away from their "no fault" policy last year. The refurbs HG's listed at Optics4Birding note that "Nikon's lifetime limited warranty is included". I reached out to Steve to confirm this and he checked with his Nikon rep and said that's accurate. Now I'm not sure what to think :/

My understanding of the Refurbished warranty is in line to what Bob stated in Post # 11. This statement on the Optics for Birding basically says you are covered for failure in normal use and operation not for if you drop them and shatter the glass. If in doubt, I would look for them on sale from LL Bean with the full warranty. Many of BF have purchased them from there during sales.

Follow up to above:

I found the sales order for the Nikon 10x35 E2. It is dated 8/12/2005.

I paid $229.00 for the binocular. I also picked up a Vixen/Televue Porta Mount with a Televue Plate for $425.00 and 3 issues of Amateur Astronomy magazine for $15.00.

I still have the 90 Day Limited Warranty. The new Gray Nikon Box the binocular came in identifies it in big yellow letters as "Reconditioned Product."

and in black letters: "7411B 10x35E II" covered by a (90) NINETY DAY LIMITED WARRANTY

Just ordered HG 8x30 refurbished direct from Nikon for 566 bucks with tax. I was thinking of buying this to compare to my CL, but was being lazy about spending the full price. Under 600 is a good price for this binocular.
I've been reading good things about it. Compared to my 1st gen CL, the HG has much wider FOV, closer focus, faster focus and is about 1 ounce lighter. Should be a little sharper on distant subjects I would think from what I've read in reviews. Hoping I like it and it works well with my eyeglasses.

Thanks! It was your old review of them that inspired me. After I read your review I began to read some more about it. I was initially going to just upgrade to the new Swaro CL-b from my old CL since it made some sense to upgrade to the new one. I came across your review and it changed my mind. Holger's comparison of the HG and new CL helped as well. It seems the HG may be more of an upgrade with its wider FOV and closer focus. I also like that it was described to have a Leica type of view with good colors and contrast.
I'll post about it if it works out and I like it.

Ooof I hope my review doesn't leave you thinking I'm a total dolt

Watching the storks today against blazing blue sky, kettling near the sun, I was really impressed with how they did with glare, and wasn't bothered by the chromatic aberration.

I'm not quite enough of a binocular geek to do a better comparison, as I do find value in just enjoying what I have and not obsessing over every detail. However I've been tempted many times to get a CL-B to compare, or to get a MHG 10x42 to compare to my ELSV...
