suggestions for a comparision: Swarovski, Leica, Zeiss (1 Viewer)

binomania

Hi from Italy, tomorrow i will receive a specimen of Swarovski NL PURE 8x42, so i like to do a comparison with my friends.
We have: Zeiss SF 8x42, Noctivid 8x42, Swarovski SLC 8x42 and EL 8.5x42

We would like to focus on some features, because during the 3-4 October we will test also some big binoculars for astronomy.

What do you want us to control, in particular?? I will also make a video on youtube for this comparison

Hi Piergiovanni, I look forward to reading your reviews, personally I`m not too bothered about ranking sharpness or resolution, to me all the models you have listed excel here, however there is some suggestion about the NL`s stray light control which I would find interesting.

Cheers.

John.

How about a review similar to https://www.allbinos.com/rankings.html. I like the way the binoculars are ranked.

Hi Piergiovanni,

Thanks for asking ! They are all fine binoculars, and in reality quite close in practical performance - so your job will be a difficult one (though enjoyable in the great outdoors :)

We all like to know about sharpness/resolution, microcontrast, and brightness. But I think these will be pretty close.

Probably of great interest is the colour representation - which one presents the most neutral view and so the most lifelike in a wide range of lighting conditions.

Also, how does the subtlety (and saturation) of the colours at either end of the colour spectrum display ? ie. the violets/blues at one end, and the oranges/reds/browns at the other ?

Even more, how do these display in a variety of lighting aspects - from favorable - lowish angles of sun behind you - to harsh midday sun - to overcast/cloudy (is there a clear CA handling winner?) - to adverse conditions - looking at near angles into the sun - what happens to the subject then ? Does one binocular clearly show a clarity, detail, and colour faithfulness advantage or industry leading performance ?

This brings us to what people are very interested in - the glare handling performance, and also the ease of view.

The other topic of interest is the extra wide Fov of the new NL. Does it really offer an advantage in practice ? say for instance when following skittish 'geewhizzits' at close range in thick cover ?

Ultimately - which one do you like looking through the most ?

Thanks and enjoy :t:

Hi to all, i am happy regarding your interesting comments.
At the moment i've only published a short video on Youtube with a "estetichal" comparison between EL 8.5x42 and SF 8x42
I confirm that the glow at the bottom of the field is noticeable..

You can find the video here:

I've also weight

Piergiovanni. Do you notice any benefit from the head rest with the NL 8x42 as far as stabilization? Thanks!

Hi! some considerations with my poor english. I just got back from a ride in the mountains above my house.
The "glare" in the lower part of the field decreases by lowering the eyepiece hoods. I'm having a little trouble finding a comfortable position for myself. It is not so immediate to use. My friends with eyeglasses and hoods all lowered have no particular problems. Regarding the support for the head, I think it has some usefulness with the 12X, with the 8X I don't notice any particular differences. Besides, it works to look up, if you look down or straight it doesn't seem very necessary. I think those who use 12X can give you more informations. Tonight, I'll do a test of stargazing with and without support.

Grazie! Ciò conferma molte altre opinioni sui vantaggi del poggiatesta con NL 8x42.

Be sure to check for your take on resolution and sharpness, not sure why this was not wanted.

I have read many of your reviews, and I have not seen you rate these factors very well, so tell us more about how you would accomplish that ?

Jerry

Hi Jerry,

I`v come to understand that somebody else`s ranking of resolution or sharpness does`nt help me very much in my final buying decision even though I enjoy reading them. I`m 59, I sailed through my last eye test and don`t need glasses.

However I will say I have read nearly all Piergiovanni`s reviews and generally I see very similar results.

My current SF is superb, but to my eyes its not as sharp as my SV was or any NV I`v tried, but I`m not convinced it resolves any less detail.

John.

Hi John, thanks for appreciating my reviews. I come from the astronomy sector, I wanted to give a more technical edge to my reviews, but my readers prefer practical tests in the field. For this reason I am not very detailed in describing some technical characteristics, indeed from this year on binomania there will also be various articles concerning the Italian oases where to observe birds. I'm making arrangements for this. I use both the EL 8.5x42 and the Zeiss SF 8x42. The Swarovski is more contrast but I prefer the Zeiss for other characteristics: wide field of view, balance, lightness.
