Ultravid and Close Focus (1 Viewer)

Looking at a lightly used Ultra-vid 10x42.... but the close focus is 9.7 feet which per Leica is pretty conservative and might actually be closer to 8.5 feet. Anyone have any knowledge of how close 'close focus' is for the Ultravid 10x42? For birding, I like it lower.

Also....the focus wheel on the Ultravid. Is it a bit clunky still? Some dealer told me a few months ago that he thought they might be improving it, ....Not sure why they didn't have the same smooth focus wheel as the Trinovid.

Leica states 9.5 ft close focus for the UV 10x42. As to focus knobs, there must just be some variation. My own and half a dozen other Ultravids I've tried over the years (and our closely related Trinovid BR) have all had lovely smooth ones.

I have three UV+ and the focus wheels all work fine. Not a 10x42 though so can't measure close focus for you

Close focus:

• on my Leica UV HD 10x42 is 9.25 feet / 2.82m (left tube) and 9.35 feet / 2.85m (right tube);
• on my UV HD plus 10x42, it is 9.19 feet / 2.80m (left tube) and 9.35 feet / 2.85m (right tube).

The focus mechanism on both is impeccable in my view, I like it very much, with the typical Leica feel and light "click" when changing direction of rotation, reflecting the fact that no grease is used in the mechanism. I prefer it much over the one in the Noctivid that I find sort of "sluggish" in comparison.

Well, no....in general. But there are at times where when birding I do see birds less than 10 feet distance or I see an insect or a lump of coal or whatever. The point is, I would prefer a binocular with more up-close ability, just for those occasions...
