Be careful Steve you'll have the nomenclature police on to you with the use of 'Ceylon'Hi
Could this be a Ceylon Woodshrike?
Many thanks
A typo for scops owl, of course. I looked up the origins of "serendib"; and "Ceylon " and discovered they're derived from the same original word/term.I like 'Serendib' as the Bay Owl, the name predates Sri Lanka?
Not really, IOC call it 'Sri Lanka Bay Owl' so I just hybridised the name.A typo for scops owl, of course. I looked up the origins of "serendib"; and "Ceylon " and discovered they're derived from the same original word/term.
Also off-topic: I've always wondered why "it's all about lions" in Sri Lanka. Makes me suspect they once occurred there but I've never seen any evidence they did (SL is famous for its leopards of course)
Interesting. I've not followed taxonomy. When I saw it I thought it looked like a scops, but some ebird photos do look bay owl-ish. Do you know? Not really, IOC call it 'Sri Lanka Bay Owl' so I just hybridised the name.
As far as I know, 'bay', simply refers to colour.Interesting. I've not followed taxonomy. When I saw it I thought it looked like a scops, but some ebird photos do look bay owl-ish. Do you know?
Yes, I'm senile....................Aren't we talking 2 different birds here? The Serendib Scops-Owl and Sri Lanka Bay Owl?
Oops😂Be careful Steve you'll have the nomenclature police on to you with the use of 'Ceylon'
