Oh come surely you can spare the time to answer some of the more ‘straightforward’ threads instead of letting others (like me often!!) put our heads on the chopping block all the time before anyone else has commented 😂😂😂. (I suppose these threads are fairly risk free in that they are unlikely to come to a firm conclusion 😉)

They must be Skylarks of course - I am happy to capitulate! (When I am wrong it’s good to know there are so many people available to correct me 😁)

Personally I only chance on id threads occasionally. In the interests of full compliance I nearly posted in at #5 with Skylark lol.

I'm not sure the apparent white trailing edges to the wings really are that. It looks to me like an artefact of the light. ...But who knows..?

I think many people respond to these threads because there are far more people who experience these species. Not everyone has seen a booted racket-tail or whatever, but most will have seen Skylark and fieldfare. That same constituency will sensibly steer clear of the hybrid swarm that is the larger gulls...

Possibly - but I have also seen Skylark in their thousands over the years and these didnt immediately jump out at me as Skylark so in this type of photo ID, I am not sure experience counts for anything! I have certainly never seen Skylark with long slate grey wings as I see here!


(I am still not convinced of the ID here at all and I have the feeling nor are others if they are honest!)

Oh wow, this is a much bigger response than I was expecting for such an indistinct picture!

Even if I'm still not 100% sure what they are and may well have to leave them un-ID'd, I'm genuinely enjoying reading through the debate and learning a lot more for next time, so thanks for the input! I wasn't there when this was taken (someone asked me for help identifying them, which was perhaps a bit optimistic), so I wasn't able to get a feel for it in the field.

It seems like most people are starting to lean towards skylark? Someone mentioned corn bunting and I can confirm that corn buntings have been seen quite a lot in this area recently, so it's possible. It didn't look much like it to me from comparing with photos on the internet, but I'm definitely no expert so could be.

Did you see them land? If the majority of them landed in a hedge or in trees then they are unlikely to be Skylarks. I also think they look best for Skylark, but the lack of any visible white in the sides of the tail in any of them is a bit odd. I'd also consider Corn Bunting if they are known to be around

When in the field always note behaviour and any calls - it all helps when iding something.

I've just asked my partner (who saw them) and he thinks they landed in the grass

Seriously, I too am surprised just how many people are still feeling the need to add to this. I don’t think anyone has seriously argued for an alternative since the thread began so perhaps there is a bit of game playing or something else going on too - you wouldn’t normally get this kind of response on an ID thread and still 21 people still watching the thread - I’m a regular poster IDing things for people on the ID threads and it’s rare to get more than a few comments once the ID has been more or less decided so enjoy! 👍
