Kings Norton Nature Reserve (2 Viewers)

Are you sure it was not a muntjac deer?

Thanks for the suggestion. This is one of several possible options suggested - Roe Deer, guinea fowl, Coot, owl, goose were amongst the others.

Those who suggested the deer species seemed the most confident, but there as a suggestion from several people that the call didn't have enough of a 'bark' for a deer.

I made a quick stop at Wychall Meadows.
Bumped into Chris and next thing I could hear a Dipper singing.
Found it just along the River Rea from the footpath/footbridge.
Next thing another Dipper flew in.
2 Wychall, River Rea Dippers.
Good to see one go under the brown river.

I've visited the reserve three times in the last few weeks in search of somewhere else to go and have been really impressed; it has some brilliant wet woodland with lots of rotting trees and I'd be surprised if it did n't have LS woodpecker 20-25 years ago . The chances of that species being there now is very slim , even in the large area of no public access between the R.Rea Cycleway and the railway. That area must have woodcock ,snipe and even jack snipe but no-one will ever know. Today saw treecreepers ,GSWs ,nuthatches, teal, moorhen, mallard, grey wag ( but no dipper),redwing, water rail (heard only) and all the regular tits and common birds. Did n't visit Merecroft Pool on the other side of Wychall Lane but last week had goosander and redpoll there.

Hi Paul,
Good to read. I keep a look out.
LSWP & WC seen in the last 5 years as on BTO.
WC possibly heard recently on twitter.
BTO has a record of Snipe in 2003.

WC as in woodcock ? If one was heard it must have been during the breeding season, which makes it more interesting .Wintering woodcocks don't call.

This morning in the rain and snow, after the Dipper at Cannon Hill park, 2 Dippers appeared at a brown, fast flowing River Rea, Wychall. 2 Grey Wagtails didn't like the Dippers. 2 Heron calling overheard.
