I think this is right. It's hiding its best feature (greater coverts), and the angle makes bill-shape difficult to judge, but - given the all-blackish bill and the size (tiny) of the white spots on the median coverts - I think probably yellow-crowned night-heron.
Your bird is a Black-crowned Night Heron. On a USA holiday in 2016, whilst in San Francisco on a daytime walk to the Golden Gate Bridge I took these photographs of what I believe is a Night Heron? It was under a shoreside building which had been build on stilts.

Unfortunately D, the photographs were taken on the 12th. May 2016, underneath the Torpedo Wharf on Golden Gate promenade, San Francisco Bay.Are these the only photos you have? Yellow-crowned Night-Heron is quite rare in southern Ontario, and this would be a first-ever record for Peel Region, at least on eBird. From the details I can make out in the photos you've provided, it does look more like a Yellow-crowned than Black-crowned.
Can you give us the precise date these photos were taken, and the precise location? If there's a chance that it's still around, quite a few people would be interested in looking for it.
Thank you for your advice. I've started a new thread with these photographs. You should've create a new thread for this.
Agree with Black-crowned Night-Heron.
? Weren't the first set of photos from Ontario?Unfortunately D, the photographs were taken on the 12th. May 2016, underneath the Torpedo Wharf on Golden Gate promenade, San Francisco Bay.
In answer to D Halas. The above yellow-Crowned Night Heron pics were taken on May 29, 2021. I have taken pics of an adult Yellow-Crowned Heron on May 23, 2021 (posted below) at the same location. Exact location is/was overflow duck pond in Colonel Samuel Smith Park, Etobicoke, Ontario. Hope that helps.
No problem. I shot in both locations on same day and initially miss reported pic location.
