Set the alarm early yesterday and managed to get up before it went off. Left Neath at 4:15 and arrived at Cemlyn Bay just over 4 hours later. A lovely drive with empty roads to enjoy.
At Cemlyn I got chatting to a birder from Chesterfield. Amassing a very big year list. First time I’ve been to Cemlyn and I must say it’s a gorgeous spot. The Tern stood out straight away and showed really well. Then another birder said the Roseate was on the edge of the island. Another cracking view. I was hoping to get my life list to 300 by the end of my 50th year and the Roseate was number 300. Really chuffed.
Headed home to keep in the OH’s good books. Traffic was much worse on the way home. Did head back over the Tregaron mountain road. By Llyn Brianne a couple of Whinchat were present. This is usually quite a reliable spot for them but I couldn’t find them a few weeks back.
Back home and a celebratory Orkney Brewery Dark Island. Delicious.

Life list now 300

Congratulations on the triple century Rich! We love a trip to Cemlyn, great when the Terns are in full swing, often some a nice range of wildfowl & waders in winter, and the occasional scarcity or downright rarity too, a first rate site, glad you've made its acquaintance. Arch and I were well placed to dart across on day one, welcome recompense for dipping the Rufous Turtle Dove the day before. Just need to sort the Albatross now, Arch is positively champing at the bit!

Headed down to Langford Lakes yesterday morning. Lovely reserve but stuffed. I managed to get a quick shot of the falcon, over the shoulder of a birder, and through a small hole in the screen. Left after about 2-3 minutes to find somewhere quieter. Did add Green Sandpiper to the year list as well.

Headed to Westhay. A lovely little reserve on the Somerset levels. And much quieter
Had good views of Marsh Harriers, Kestrel, Sparrowhawk and Great White Egrets. After a bit of persistence I picked up a Hobby as well, hawking for Dragonflies over one of the ponds.

Finished the day by meeting a few mates in Bristol. Watched the Lions and then had a cracking curry in The Old India. Can 100% recommend this place. Has to to be the best vegetarian curry I’ve ever had - superb.

Lovely morning out with my youngest and the old man yesterday. Headed East to Newport. The Wetlands Centre was very quiet so we headed over to Goldcliff. Bumped into Brian which is always good. Brian mentioned that most birds were over by the Seawall hide so that’s where we headed. Did stop off at hide 2 first though to take a look at the Ruff.
From the Seawall hide we had some decent views of a Marsh Harrier. Knot and heaps of Ringed Plovers were also present. Year ticked a Spotted Sandpiper that was coming out of its summer plumage and a Little Stint. A couple of birders from the West Country were also enjoying the birds.

Finished off with a lovely piece of salted caramel cake from Goldcliff Seawall Tearooms. Delicious.

Went for a walk up the Neath canal yesterday. Good to finally add Kingfisher to the year list.

Lovely morning down Penclacwydd with my youngest on Saturday. Dipped on the Dowitcher but had great views of Pintails, Spotshank, Ruff, Glossy Ibis and Blackwits.

Went on a pelagic out of Pembs today. Really enjoyed despite the birds not really playing ball. A great bunch on board. Good to put a face to the name with Terry. And good to see Andy from Pembs again. The birders from Norwich and Watford were good company as well as Heather and Dafydd originally from just down the road from us. All others great as well.
Good numbers of Gannets and Manxies. The Fulmars were probably my favourites but closely followed but the Storm Petrels. Balearic Shearwater also made it unexpectedly on to the year list.
