Sooty or Bridled Tern - Gulf of Thailand July 2021 (1 Viewer)

Dear members and bird watchers

Spotted 9 of these birds yesterday. In my book "Birds of Thailand" there is only two options. Sooty or Bridled and they look the same in the book. Bridled a lighter shade of black. And the Sooty Tern shows dark wing tip under the wing and the Bridled have only a dark band back of the wing in the book

But I ID the bird as a Sooty thanks the the darker wing tip, attached picture #1

Anyone know if I am on thin ice with my ID?

Given the extent of the white forehead and thickness of the black loral line, I'd call that a Bridled, but it is years since I've seen either.

The light black colour and I was thinking Bridled until I checked the pictures and the dark wingtip.

The pale hind neck contrasting with the black cap is also indicative of Bridled as Sooty should be concolourus.

I was to report the birds in eBird and there was no Bridled or Sooty option. Only Sooty/Bridled Tern

Go to add species and add the one you want. Additionally, when it asks for explanation write have photos and add photos to the observation as soon as possible. I would expect that historically most observations have been under conditions where photos were not possible and where descriptions were not good enough to prove one or the other, and that is why the default is the slash.
