It updated last night and today has been a nightmare. Long thinks, crashing the browsers etc etc.

I've re-booted countless times (well at least 3 LOL) and sat waiting and waiting for it to "prepare windows". Which it didn't. I could go on. Lenovo did a repair of C: on the last one and things seem a little more stable.

Now I get another message telling me that Windows will be updating again tonight. Is this going to be to repair the damage from last night or what.... do I leave my lappy switched on when I go to bed? Or do I switch it off and wait a few days.

I had a three hour update last night and seem to have got out of it unscathed. And have as yet seen nothing different at all.

Thanks Steve.

Guess either you were lucky or I've been unlucky!!

I wonder if it was something fighting with Lenovo's system then?

I assume you've got 'automatic updates' turned off Delia?

Dunno.... I've looked at the settings and don't see anything about Automatic Updates.

What it usually does is to pop up a message to say that there's an update ready to upload at an inactive time and to not turn the computer off. I seem to remember setting this for 2am some time ago.

So I leave the laptop on when I go to bed.

But having got into the Settings, I can't even see where this time can be altered.

I get the feeling you're running Windows from a hard drive (rather than a solid state drive), which would explain the sluggish performance.

What is the system make and model?

Hi KM

As far as I know it's the C: drive. I've no idea what a "solid state drive" is!!

I didn't allow the update to go ahead last night and all has been well today... running quite quickly.

It's a Lenovo Ideaspad310

If you go to Start > Run and enter dfrgui (then OK), you will see if your C: is a hard disk drive (would explain the performance issues you're having) or a solid state drive (faster, silent, runs cooler).

I'm not too sure what I'm supposed to be looking at but think I'm there:

It says:

Windows (C)
701 GB free of 892 GB

Oh I see you've now edited that post, which is what I've replied to LOL.

Now we hit a problem.

I click on Start, but nowhere do I see "Run", nor anywhere to enter anything that you might want to search for?

You have a hard disk drive, then.

You can tap Win + R to bring up Run, if you wish to confirm.

It isn't Windows 10 that's slow, it's that primary drive, unfortunately ☹️

You're using 191 GB of the drive. You can pick up a 256 GB solid state drive for around £30-£35 and it would vastly improve the performance of the machine. You'd need someone technically-minded to install it and ghost your current installation across, though.

OK Thanks KM.

Thing is, it's running fine at the moment, not slow at all (well as fast as I can move LOL). It was just the day after the update it all went to pot. And not for the first time the updates have screwed things.

It went through a period of muting the sound for 3 hours then suddenly would turn it on again. This was every day for a few months! At the same time the left shift key wouldn't work on some letters (C, S and A. Also some other keys wouldn't work... s a and (. That lasted for weeks. Another update changed the keyboard from UK to US.

Since one last year I've had to cover touch pad with card! It had been set that if the mouse was connected the touch pad was disabled. I can't see any way to disable the touch pad now. The key strokes I used to know didn't work.

I always wonder what's going to be wrong whenever there's an update.

If you lived near Staffordshire, I'd pop over and help :(

Yuk!!! Having been working fine since Sunday, no issues at all. On start up this morning....

PhraseExpress : phrases mostly blank fields
Firefox started to load, then got the message:
Error platform version 91.0.1 is not compatible with MinVersion >= 91.0
MaxVersion <= 91.0
(Whatever that means)
Pale Moon started to upload OK then unexpectedly closed down (was updated)

Rebooted

PhraseExpress completely empty

Rebooted

PhraseExpress loaded OK
Microsoft Edge loaded OK (hate that browser though) but bumbled along with it for a bit

Tried Firefox... same error message

Rebooted

PhraseExpress opened OK
Pale Moon Loaded OK and now working fine
Firefox - same error
Thunderbird loaded OK and working fine

So what has screwed Firefox then?

Looks like the Web browser updated and the PhaseExpress extension is no longer compatible.

The extension developer needs to update it.

Something on the following link may help:

Hi KM... think you may have misunderstood some of my ramble. PhraseExpress is working perfectly now.

Pale Moon updated last night and is now working perfectly after the initial hiccup.

It's Firefox which has collapsed although it's been working fine since the initial problems on Saturday morning.

But thanks for reminding me about the Firefox forums. I'll have a nosy in there to see what's (maybe) going on.
