request advice on Nikon Fieldscope eyepiece (1 Viewer)

Please may I request advice: As regards the eyepiece in the attached photo.

1. Is it a good eyepiece eg multicoasted etc
2. Has it got nice field of view
3. Is it valuable.

It comes with a Nikon Fieldscope II ED60. This is the only photo of it. It is advertised as a 30x WF eyepiece

This looks like the MC version of the x20/x30/x38 eyepiece.

You will have already found that there is several people on this forum who are very knowledgeable on Nikon Fieldscope optics, so I would prefer them to assist/confirm, but I would suggest that as a MC version this would be a rare eyepiece.

I would suggest you also remind the forum which scope and eyepiece you have already bought, my main reasoning is that at x30 on a 60mm objective scope the field of view will be less than that of the x16/x24/x30 version (i.e x24 on a 60mm).

It's whether you might find an appreciable difference over your current set up in terms of FOV. But the MC eyepieces have the upgraded coatings, if I am correct on the identification!

I think you have an ED60 ii already? If so the 20/30/38x should be perfect and I think the fact it states the ED50 magnification shows it has new (newest?) coatings. Others may be able to confirm that point. I guess you then compare the two scope bodies and sell the copy you like least, probably easiest sold with an eyepiece though.

This eyepiece is actually on my “want list”, to complete my magnification set (I actually have a WTB post in the forums with no responses), although I use an ED50 and ED82. On both of those I usually use approximately 30x (27x on ED50 and 30x on ED82) and I think that is considered the sweet spot for magnification on these scopes. See This thread for some details of people using the eyepiece with the various bodies.

I would suggest that this eyepiece comes up pretty infrequently, especially on it’s own. My latest acquisition was a 75x DS and I paid £89 but I would suggest the 38x MC is a lot more desirable and therefore worth more.

Nikon UK advised me last summer the only current eyepieces are as follows, with their RRPs…..

1. 40x/60x/75x Wide DS eyepiece: RRP £309.00;
2. 40x/50x Wide DS eyepiece: RRP £309.00;
3. 13-30x/20-45x/25-56x MC Zoom eyepiece: RRP £229.00;
4. 24x/30x Wide DS eyepiece: RRP £279.00.

Thank you so much. I had already (recently) purchased a Nikon Fieldscope II 60mm (not ED) with a 20x-45x zoom eyepiece. It has narrow field of view and hurts the eyes a bit when used for a long time. I read on this forum the wider angle is good and that fixed EP are wider field of view. Thus , the other day, when I saw a scope on ebay Fieldscope II ED60 with a zoom eyepiece as well as a fixed WF 30x eyepiece (the one in question) I bought it.
It hasnt come yet. Incidentally I searched google for this exact eyepiece with difficulty but eventually saw a photo of one which I think is the same eyepiece. (attached). I dont know if this is helpful . I can see a red line on the cap, but am not sure if this means anything. I am guessing this eyepiece is something of an old model. It looks different to the ones advertised as the MC 20/30/38 eyepiece. I wonder if this one is multicoated.

I think the red line you see is part of an ED50 body, not the eyepiece. Your eyepiece will be multicoated If as per your original image.

As Essex Tern stated yes it will be multicoated and you will also find it will have much better eye relief. You have done well to find that eyepiece.

Thank you for your kind advice. As you will recall I purchased a Nikon Fieldscope II with a 20x-45x EP a week or two ago. (Non-ED) . Then after seeing one for sale (ED this time) with the fixed 30x WA Eyepiece as well as a zoom EP, I went for it at £150. I think the fixed EP is an older model. When the kit arrives (expected in the middle of the week) I will report back LOL. If the purchase is better than the original one I will probably put the first one on ebay or something LOL

That is my favorite Fieldscope EP. I keep mine on an ED50 mostly but sees duty on my ED82 as well. No reason it wouldn't be the great on an ED60 @ 30x.

Thank you. Is it the zoom EP you are referring to as your fave or the other one please ? I understand the fixed one (30x on the EP60) affords a wider field of view than you get when the zoom is set to 30x

The scope (and 2 EP's arrived today) I have photographed the fixed 30x EP. I am going to check it out for field of view. Please could anyone advise (a) is this actually an MC model (b) I notice the bit at the end screws in or outwards. Would I use it in or out. what if the purpose of the settings?

The eyepiece in your original post, the 20/30/38 MC wide. The one you received with the scope.
Never been a fan of either zoom EP, though they're good sharpness wise.

congratulations to a very good deal. The EP alone would have been cheap for that amount.
Keeping my fingers crossed that the ED 60 body is good too...
