Are Leica UV HD+ 7x42 or 8x42 bins as punchy/contrasty as their 8x32 Ultravid HD + bins are? (1 Viewer)

Just got the 7x42 back. It is better, but still not what I would call Alphaclass. Still has that “oval” and slightly uneven feeling to the rotation. Strangely I can pick up a dozen binoculars at random in the shop and most are actually better in this regard.

Considering how much I like the optics and ergonomics I decided to accept the flaw but cannot give credit Leica for the design or handling time.

Two of the other Ultravids in shop are better and two are same or worse. They don’t have another 7x42 available though.

Sorry to hear that, HenRun. Personally, I might be inclined to return to Leica again and tell them it is not acceptable.

The lesson here: return all products (binocular or otherwise) to the retailer, ASAP, for exchange or refund, if for whatever reason they don't meet with your approval.

So true that. Also they kind of feel slightly out of collimation. I hope I am wrong but I can no longer merge the tubes to a uniform field stop. Need to view with fresh eyes, it is dark outside over here. Hope I am wrong. Love the format otherwise.

The UVHD+ bins (I have 3 at present, have had 5 - all from current production) are fantastic binoculars. But as with all products, product variation from sample to sample does exist.

Check collimation. If it's out, send in for service, including the focuser. Don't accept until it meets with your satisfaction. If this time (3rd time, counting initial purchase) you aren't pleased - you might ask for a replacement. Perhaps work with the retailer for additional support.

Update: after consulting the store manager he suggested that sending it back to Leica again would not be worthwhile. I had the option of ordering another pair from Germany, a refund, or exchange for something else. I will have to give the store credit for handling it very well and being understanding.

I was honestly not keen on ordering another 7x42 "blind" and that is simply because regardless of brand I would like to handle the merch before purchase and since I currently have no sub 10X binocular I wasn't willing to wait two weeks after a month and a half without one already. My long term relationship with optics has had me reach the conclusion that sample variation is a larger factor when it comes to the mechanics, and not so often about the optics, though that has happened too.

So, with much regret, I handed the 7x42 back. Love the size, ergonomics and optics. But I could not have my most expensive binocular have the worst focuser of the lot I have/had.

By chance I did try out the Swarovski Pure NL 8x32 and it did surprise me. Swarovskis are usually great - but I have always found other and better priced alpha binoculars that have served me better, like Meopta, Leica or Zeiss. But this one felt great right off the bat and I ended up going home with the Orange Pure NL 8x32 and with some spare change from the Leica return.

It might sound strange: I would have preferred a Leica 7x42 in perfect working order, in part due to my 35 years of having something Leica at hand and the ease of view with the 7x42 was superb. But, to be fair the Swarovski 8x32 is not a step down, it is a lateral step to something equally great but slightly different. And, yes, the Swarovski focuser is buttersmooth, and the best I have used with gloves on, ever. And that alone is a world of difference in everyday use: the Leica was so stiff that wind resistant gloves would slip on the wheel before engaging if I was finetuning focus.

My love affair with Leica is not over, just currently not dating. :D

HenRun... it's great that your dealer worked with you so flexibly! I am very picky about focuser feel, myself, so I totally understand that importance to you! The 8x32NL is an excellent choice if the ergonomics/handling suit you. All's well that end's well.

I've been trying out the Ultravid 8x32HD+ and finding them a bit on the small/fiddly size and also, the focus wheel is quite stiff...
Well... I've come a complete 180º from this earlier post of mine, regarding the x32 models. Now having UVHD+ 8x32 and 10x32, I've come to LOVE the size and format of these wonderful, delightfully compact binoculars. Their charm and appeal rivals their fine quality and gorgeous "view".

And, I am quite enjoying the UVHD+ 7x42 experience, as well. Bravo, Leica!

Sometimes binos "grow on you" even if they don't feel "perfect" at first. The Leica UVHD+ 8x32 is a true compact, the only relatively small 8x32 I liked better for size/ergonomics combined is the Meopta Meostar B1.1 8x32. The Meopta is not as good optically as the Leica though. A friend has the Leica UVHD+ 8x32 now and the size difference between it and the Swarovski is substantial.

So true - these grew on me very quickly.

I find the UVHD+ 8x32 (and 10x32) to be simply superb binoculars. I am thrilled by their performance - the optics are stunningly sharp with dramatic clarity and color quality, the build and materials quality is unsurpassed, and the size is so compact without being too small. Not to mention the simple, elegant design - they are aesthetically drop dead gorgeous.

If I could change anything, I'd like the focuser tension to be just a little bit lighter to the touch, but as is, the focuser is very smooth, perfectly even, with no irregularities, nor null spots, at all. The UVHD+ binocular is a marvel of design and engineering.

I bought the Leica Ultravid HD +10x42 when they first came out in 2015 then sold them on!! I now have a new pair of 8x42 HD+ . I do like x10,but, aesthetically the image with the X8 takes some beating.
Peter.

Peter... I'm not familiar with the expression it "takes some beating". Does that mean that you think the 8x image suffers? Or excels?

Oh... I found it with a search. Haven't heard that one before. The 8x image is so good, that it is difficult for other optics to match it! I fully agree.

We are only separated by a common language ! Oh! and 3,000 miles of Ocean!

Yes , a truly great Binocular inside and out.
Peter.

Common language, for sure (isn't that nice!). But expressions curiously vary, geographically - which I quite enjoy. We watch a lot of British shows and I always enjoy hearing the unique expressions coined in my ancestral homeland.

And the tea! Oh yeah.

Tetly,P G tips or Yorkshire tea, not necessarily in that order.

I've been on a tea quest... sampling and comparing:
Twinings EBT
Twinings IBT
Taylors EBT
Taylors SBT
Taylors IBT
Barrys IBT
PG Tips
PG Tips Gold
Yorkshire
Tetley British Blend

For a time, the Twinings EBT was my favorite, then it was Yorkshire, then PG Tips was my choice. I been rotating them, one day to the next, for months.

Over time... I've come to think the Tetley British Blend is my favorite. They're all wonderful, though. Can't go wrong with any of them.
