Some nice sightings there Kitty, there's some surprisingly good birding spots around the outskirts of Norwich ~ have you ever tried Bawburgh (spelling?)fishing lakes (not too far from your side of town) to the north west of norwich? not sure what the access situation is though.

Matt

No I've not tried that area, but I think a local dive group dived Bawburgh mill recently. Was up at Hellesdon Mill in the hopes of shooting a kingfisher (with my camera ;)). Heard but not seen, but they are quite regular in that area, just very flighty.

Roseate Tern and Arctic Skua past Gore Point, Holme Dunes today (per RBA).

All welcome to the NOA moth day tommorow. Meet at around 10 am, trap opening at 10:30 am. There will also be a slide show talk and it should be good fun!

cheers,

Connor

Cranes

Now I appreciate that you have been asked this a million times but I am coming to Norfolk for 2 weeks in August on my holidays

Can you suggest somewhere to go and see Cranes ?

Also I am missing Yellow Wag and Turtle Dove from the old yearlist. Any suggestions.

Cheers
Darren

We saw two at Hickling broad no more than 200 yds from the NWT visitor centre one week ago - apparently been there all summer. ;)

Have a look at my web site for some ideas of where to go, although most of Norfolk is lovely!
Best Wishes

Moth Day at NOA was a good social event, with a surprising number of moths considering the weather. Cake was distributed, which was which very appropriate as a lady member was celebrating her 60th birthday.

Rain most of day. Arriving at Holme Bird Observatory, we saw a turtle dove, 1 little tern, green sandpiper calling and several whimbrel going over. After lunch, Andy and I and BF Norfolkbirder (Chris M) had a look round golfcourse as someone had seen a Little Stint. We walked right out to sea (low tide now) and saw several little ringed plovers, little terns, sandwich terns, common terns, 1 adult med gull, 3 bar tailed godwits, several sanderlings, dunlin, 1 gannet. Also a dead porpoise on edge of tide. I almost to my horror, was inches off standing on a sweet baby ringed plover chick, I just saw it in time and it scurried away. As we got back to cars, the sun came out and lots of birds appeared in the sunshine including goldfinches, greenfinches, robin, swallows, martins. We then went to Hunstanton and had fish 'n' chips on the front watching fulmars and the sun setting. Something really odd happened sitting here, a black headed gull dropped, only feet from us a quite large white chalk stone!!!!!!! - never seen this happen before!

Best Wishes Penny:girl:

Glad you had a good day Penny. I was going to join you but it has poured with rain here all day and I decided to do school work whilst it was raining in the hope it will clear tomorrow (now today). However to my surprise I saw a Spotted Flycatcher on my telephone wire outside my front window during one downpour. Some sad news in that one of my much loved House Sparrows died on my driveway. I shall bury it tomorrow. I can't see that it would be lack of food as they must be the best fed sparrows of all time!
Good Birding
Sue
