Focusing Problem With Zr Ed2 8x43

I am far from satisfied with my ZR ED2 8X43. Optically they are excellent. Build quality leaves a lot to be desired. The focusing mechanism has jammed up. I thought it may have been a bit of grit that got in between the focusing wheel and it's inner barrel. I applied some very light precision...

    County Galway Birding (local patch)

I reported my Ring Ouzel sightings to the Ring Ouzel Study Group. I got a reply from Chris Rollie, Area Manager, RSPB. This is his reply: Brendan, Many thanks for your report – although ring ouzels breed in that area, I believe, there is a good chance that so many together at this date are...

    County Galway Birding (local patch)

Nothing to do with Galway birding but felt I just had to tell somebody about my great good birding luck on my Wainwright Coast to Coast walk over past two weeks. I saw eight Ring Ouzels in one day (yes eight, 5 male and 3 female) on the high level route from Keld to Reeth on top of Swaledale...

I note from BirdGuides that a Great Spotted Cuckoo was seen near Barna on the 9th. Was it a once off or is it still around?

    Walking shoes

I do longish walks (12 - 20 miles) one Sunday a month on quite paved roads. My Meindl Burma mountain boots were far too heavy so I bought a pair Ascics Gel Arrata walking shoes. A great buy and only 345 grammes as against 1800 grammes for the Meindls.

At Lough Inch, Barna this morning: Pair of Common Sandpipers Cuckoo Pair of otters. I've seen the otters frolicking in the past month so presumably they are an item.

    County Galway Birding (local patch)

Walking near Ballinaboy south of Clifden last Sunday about 2.00 pm, I saw a huge bird being mobbed by two crows. By the time I got the bins out it was some distance away but I was clearly able to see the unmissable pure white on the tail and also a lot of white on the crown of head and nape. I...

    County Galway Birding (local patch)

On our club outing to Nimmo's Pier on 1/12/12 we were reasonably confident that we saw the Foster's with three Sandwich Terns. Conditions were difficult - low tide, long distance and directly under a low bright sun. Has nobody else noticed a big decline in Greenfinch numbers?

    County Galway Birding (local patch)

Where have all the Greenfinch gone? Greenfinch used to be the most common species at my bird feeders. I haven't seen one in the last 2 weeks. I know there was a serious disease about 2 years ago that particularly affected greenfinch. Has this led to a serious population decline

Panasonic Lumix G1 at last - what a gem for digiscoping

I've just bought the Lumix G2. I need a remote shutter release. The Panasonic DMW-RSL1 Remote cable control retails at about £60 - a ridiculous price. I see similar non Panasonic remote shutter releases (for Lumix G2) on Ebay from Camera Market and others for about £8.99. Are these safe to use...

Cheap step up ring for Kowa DA10 adaptor?

Thanks for the reply,RJM. As nobody has come up with a solution, I've had to buy the 20MM lens and one Kowa ring for £64. SRB-Griturn did offer to make me two rings for £60 (for the two) but there will be a 6-8 week wait.

Cheap step up ring for Kowa DA10 adaptor?

I am about to buy a Panasonic Lumix G2 with 14-45 kit lens for digiscoping with Kowa TSN 883. (I will buy the fixed 20mm pancake lens when I can afford it). I already have the Kowa DA10 scope adaptor. I will need a step up ring to connect the lens to the DA10. The Kowa rings cost a whopping £64...

    County Galway Birding (local patch)

I had my first sighting of a Grasshopper Warbler this morning near Dangan playing fields. A good and prolonged sighting. I didn't know that the tail vibrates like the clappers when they are singing. Directions: Walk upriver on bank of Corrib to metal stile at end of playing fields. Cross stile...

    County Galway Birding (local patch)

I was privileged to witness a not often seen spectacle of nature yesterday. Walking by Lough Kip river, two Red Grouse got up about 30m away from me from two different spots about 25m apart. I was very surprised to see that they were two males. They flew across the river and landed in the same...
