Mindo: Birding the West Slope of Ecuador

Your writing style is infused with that enthusiasm, which is why these narrative trip reports are such a treasure here on the forum. They deserve a larger audience! Yes, a timeout for dining is a consideration when one only has a few days - or hours - in an area. The food can wait - the birds...

Mindo: Birding the West Slope of Ecuador

Hi everyone; I live in western Ecuador and thoroughly enjoyed reading this 'West Slope' summary/narrative! The story vibrates with life and transfers that joy of observing the species to all of us - and makes us want to enjoy the same experience! Many of these species I know well, and...

    Hi group

With a big smile, I also welcome you to the forum - so great to have another person to represent this area of Manabi Province, especially one who is a good friend and quiet warrior for nature! With a greater smile I will share a few images from time spent at Poza Honda last week. (There were...

Mindo: Birding the West Slope of Ecuador

What a beautiful narrative! I have also experienced the beauty and magic of Refugio/Angel Paz, so this provided an easy immersion without having to travel.

That is stunning! Painted from life - with watercolor - in the park - with the distractions of people watching? Advance to the head of the class! You are a true professional - and have keen eyesight as well!

    Your Most Recent "Life" Bird

Wow; eBird stats for show three Blue Grosbeak sightings for Ecuador, the very southern edge of its range. In early July I looked at the stats of the Pearly-breasted Cuckoo (only four sightings here) and then five hours later was staring at that bird for over an hour. I am about to leave for...

    Your Most Recent "Life" Bird

I toss a riddle to all of you about my most recent life bird. The sighting was on a cloudy and cool afternoon on July 2, 2022 in the dry forest of western Ecuador - Manabi Province. The rainy season ended at least a month ago, and most of the trees are in 'conserve water' mode...

Hello Bird Forum, I have just Registered, I am very interested in caring for wildlife. I have an extremely untidy wild gardenm with too many Trees.

I found this post refreshing and agree - one can never have too many trees! It was interesting to read not only about the nesting box falling and the observations that followed, but also (to read) about the injured blackbird and the RX for mending a broken beak. Life is great when people...

Thank you! Back in the city, I find myself wondering if those birds are having their morning drink right now - in contrast to the noise pollution of a city awakening.

Thank you! I often hear them before seeing them - sounding a bit like a 'catfish' or a Masked Tityra. They are stunning birds and often totally ignore the humans, especially yesterday.

    Orange-fronted Barbet

After spending a night in the guest house at 'Casa Poza Honda," I stepped outside and saw a male Great Antshrike, which led me to the front of the house. Orange-fronted Barbets were either drinking rainwater or nectar from flowers that seemed to be custom tailored to match these handsome birds.

Si, they are handsome birds, smart and always on alert. Thank you!

    Brown Wood Rail

I was indeed Blessed by Birds when the Brown Wood Rails were my backyard neighbors in an off-the-beaten path area of Manabi Province. Almost every day these birds roamed the ravines on each side of the yard and often foraged in easy view in the back yard that sloped all the way to the water...
