Flycatcher & Bunting, today, San Blas, Mexico

Another big problem I have with my earlier answer is the structure of the mandible. Looking more closely, it is not the mandible of a grassquit. So 🤷🏼‍♂️

Flycatcher & Bunting, today, San Blas, Mexico

Hi All, I think that DMW had it right on the "bunting" early on. It is a funky angle and a tightly cropped image, which I suspect are helping to trip up minds. A few things stand out to me on this bird. First, the primary projection is REALLY short. Not the wing of a longer distance migrant...

    Rufous-tailed Hummingbird Mexico

This one is the similar looking Berylline Hummingbird. Notice the rufous in the wings. Chris

    Puerto Vallarta Flycatcher

Looks good for a Western-type Flycatcher and in the lowlands of western Mexico should be Pacific-slope based on currently accepted species limits.

    Austin Texas USA

This looks like a likely Orange-crowned Warbler which is a really common wintering bird in southern Texas and a reasonable bet in Austin as well. Chris

    Kingbird Oaxaco Mexico

This one is a Tropical Kingbird. Chris

    Broad-tailed or Bumblebee Hummingbird Mexico

Well, these images are a bit blurry, but it looks like there is rufous evident in the two images where the tail is slightly spread (at least rectrices 4 and 5). Also, neither Bumblebee nor Broad-tailed have orange colored gorget feathers. Broad-tailed typically has paler feathering around the...

    Panama Flycatcher Canopy Lodge Panama

Chris, The flycatcher in your shot is a Panama Flycatcher. Attached is a composite comparing Panama Flycatcher (L) to a Dusky-capped Flycatcher (R), both from the El Valle area of Panama. Note the much darker cap and face of the Dusky-capped compared with your bird. Chris

    Broad-tailed or Bumblebee Hummingbird Mexico

I'm not sure where in Mexico this location is, but the gorget color (more orange than red/purple) and strong rufous wash to flanks suggest either Rufous or Allen's as the likely candidate. Chris

Unknown bird - Sonoran Desert @ Tucson, AZ

This sounds like a Harris's Antelope-Squirrel. Here is a link to an example: Harris's antelope squirrels | Western Soundscape Chris

    Recordings from México

Hi Alex, For sure they help. That's a Yucatan Flycatcher! You can see a daintier bill, paler face, and duller edgings to the visible wing coverts, etc! Chris

    Western Kingbird or Cassin's Kingbird?

Hi All, Looking at the kingbird in its entirety should lead us to the conclusion that it is an overexposed, poorly lit Cassin's Kingbird. The slightly blockier head, strong edgings to the wing coverts, and dark charcoal gray crown (despite being well lit) suggest Cassin's. The tail looks just...

    Recordings from México

For the second batch: Rec 1 maybe Hooded Warbler with faint Tropical Pewee in background. Not sure about the warbler. Rec 2 Magnolia Warbler - their weird winter call. Rec 3 Magnolia Warbler again Rec 4 Tricky one. I think a faint Great Crested Flycatcher, but some Yucatan Flycatcher calls...
