Thanks Val35, I was aware of the website, but how did you see the June records? My French is not great, but I can only find records for the past 15 days! Presumably for Pointe de Penmarc'h I would be looking for west or south westerly winds with birds then re-orientating west?

Marazion Marsh would be another good area, also fairly close to Hayle Estuary.

I found the woodpeckers fairly easily in Forest d'Iraty this June, no need for tape luring. Just looked for steep damp north facing slope around 1500m as advised by Rosbifs.

Drake Hooded Merganser, an American species which is also kept in captivity and has been known to escape/wander. I don't suppose you noticed if it was fully winged or had a ring on its leg? Dave
