    Any good aftermarket MB-D17 knockoffs?

When you say, "vertical grip," are you meaning the MB-D17 battery grip? It does have a shutter release that will allow you to take photos in the portrait orientation. Can you order one online? If so, you could order a Nikon MB-D17 online from several online stores like B&H photo, or used...

    Focal length ?

The D500 has a DX sensor (23.5 mm x 15.7 mm), which equates to a 1.5 crop. The full frame 500mm PF will have an apparent focal length of 750mm. Thus, any lens on a camera with a cropped sensor will have a longer effective focal length.

Any tips or info for transitioning to a Nikon d500?

I don't know if it is possible with the 200-500 zoom, but you should look into the autofocus correction in the D500. With the 500mm PF a slight adjustment made for sharper photos on my rig. To catch birds in flight, don't zoom in too tight if the bird is on a perch. It'll fly out of frame before...

Upgrading from Sigma 150-600 C to Nikkor 500mm PF

Telephoto zoom lenses do offer flexibility when in the field by letting the photographer choose the focal length to frame the subject. However, that flexibility comes at a cost. At the far end (> 300mm) the image sharpness starts to fall off. To counter act this, the lens must be stopped down to...
