seabirdwatching potential new ferry route between Eemshaven NL and Kristiansand NO

Agree with Mark. You are better off watching from the coast. Boats are great when you are either in areas of large seabird density or attracting them through chumming. A ferry through the eastern sector of North Sea would be very, very dull. In fact I bet there is more potential for exciting...

    Seabirds Harrison

Given Harrison's career in tour leading rich Americans who may well be tipping him $850 as small change, I suspect he has priced his prints accordingly, and he'll probably sell them. He seems like a charismatic guy, and there are lots of people who will love his personality style and be happy to...

    Latest IOC diary updates

As far as I'm concerned, its just the name I grew up with. Even at my tender years(!), I lose track of what many species are called nowadays. So, to me, its a Rufous. Or an Oriental when I feel like it. No other agenda! I also have a vague recollection that if meena did get split from orientalis...

    Water rail sp in Mongolia

Well, i'll be there again in June with one of my targets being to sound record/photo the Savi's Warblers at the same site - possibly the most easterly (presumed) breeding Savi's in the World. That and seeing all the megas, obviously!

    Water rail sp in Mongolia

The Birdlife map shows Western as basically stopping at the Mongolian border, although they almost certainly do breed in western Mongolia, as does Little Crake. Birdlife map Brown-cheeked as entering central Mongolia from the north and extending down to the Khangai mountains. My record was just...

    Water rail sp in Mongolia

For info, i recorded Western Water Rail in mid-Mongolia in May this year, as well as seeing it in the same place two years ago but without documentation. See the eBird checklist at https://ebird.org/checklist/S58136449 I was kinda hoping for Brown-cheeked!

Getting Rare Bird News in Isolated Locations

Whatsapp does require a mobile internet or wifi signal. If you don't have those, then you'll be stuffed. On the plus side, you may be the first person to tell me a genuine benefit of an iphone!! As soon as i went onto smartphones several years ago, i stopped being able to see the time an SMS...

Getting Rare Bird News in Isolated Locations

Not sure about all phones, but with mine there is no time of sending attached to an SMS. There is a time of sending attached to a Whatsapp though, which makes it much more useful. And Whatsapp only requires tiny amounts of signal, which is almost always available. I certainly get that easier...

    Turdidae

I read that as meaning Dusky and Naumann's should be lumped. Is that correct?

    New Adelie colony found

Yes, i thought of that this morning with a clearer head! But then i thought, what about if this colony has recently received an influx of birds from the other (declining) colonies. I guess they know the movements of these birds and assume that they are very colony faithful.

    New Adelie colony found

Amazing discovery, but there is a very strange paragraph in the article: "The result is of major significance because it would appear the archipelago has somehow avoided the recent Adélie declines documented elsewhere on the peninsula, particularly on its western side." How are they assessing...

The last time you saw a Greenfinch

They've declined by a huge amount following an increase in the late 90's/early 00's. Some info here https://www.bto.org/science/population-dynamics/greenfinches-and-trichomonosis and here https://www.bto.org/birdtrends2010/wcrgrefi.shtml

    2017 Western Palearctic Big Year

That was a lot of what i based my thinking on. Plus a few waders too, the distribution of Grey-tailed Tattler is a beauty! The steppes of Kazakhstan are far more WP than eastern, and then there is a handy mountain range before you get into the Eastern Palearctic steppes of Mongolia and its...
