    Lens Softness or Sub-optimal Settings/Photographer?

    As you know the more expensive option is the Sports version. It is supposed to be that bit better but is it worth the extra money. Have you thought about looking at the photos taken with the lenses you are considering on Flickr? You might find it helpful.

    Keep or chuck!!

    The one where you have toned down the background highlights it is a keeper. The birds are nicely posed and very sharp.

    Color Balance

    I agree - I prefer the old version. The colours are more vibrant - the second looks muted. I am viewing on a desktop monitor colour calibrated. However it is all down to personal preference - which do you think is closer to the actual bird?

    Beautiful pose in the first - nice capture. I think you would do well to lift the shadows on the birds body to bring out more detail in the feathers.

    I also think these are slightly front focusing. Micro adjusting your camera/lens is not too difficult but takes a little patience to get it spot on.
