    Magpies

Hi, This time of year Magpies hold what are called marriage meetings. I visited a site on one of my patches yesterday as I have been for many years and more than 40 birds were present. It is interesting watching the males fanning their tales and puffing up the plumage to impress the females...

    Cirl Buntings in my Garden

This takes me back a bit. I remember them breeding on a small holding by the family farm and I enjoyed watching them there. The holding was sold and the new owners completely destroyed their habitat and I never saw a Cirl around here after that. That was 1959. Chris

Top 5 recommended night sights between £150-500?

Hi, People I know who live in the countryside when taking their dogs out for a walk in the dark attach a small flashing neon light to the dogs collar. These are the same as used by cyclists and you can see the light flashing in the pitch black at some distance, just a thought. Chris.

    Nest box activity 2016

Hi Shirl, I am pleased to hear you also have Coal tit activity in one of your boxes, let us hope they carry on and raise a brood so you have the enjoyment of watching them. My female is sitting on 9 eggs. The Coals do get bullied by the Blue tits so it must mean they are last in line for any...

    Nest box activity 2016

Hi, The latest is the Sparrows, Blue and Coal tits are on eggs. What is interesting to me is the male Coal tit calls the female out of the box to feed her for a few minutes before she returns. The male Blue tit does the usual and feeds the female in the box. I also have Blackbird, Dunnock and...

    Nest box activity 2016

Things have started to move here with Blue tits and House sparrows occupying boxes but for me the best is a pair of Coal tits have started to build in another box. It is the first time Coals have nested in the garden and as I have cameras in all boxes I am looking forward to watching them raise...
