Definitely not the green woodpecker, just tracked that down and it's a little too consistent. I'll attempt to get a recording this weekend but it does sound very similar to the cuckoo call posted above.

Quite a few male cuckoos about in the area, I'd never even considered the female would be so different.

Thanks guys, I'm just looking for a sample of a female cuckoo so I can discount that.
I have spent a lot of time outdoors and never heard anything like it in years of fishing and travelling.
Looks like I'm going to have to start staking it out :)
