New but probably wrong insight about lowlight

Hi, @Binastro I agree, but I did not mean astro use. @Swetpat I think that this discussion has taken place before, not sure if with you or how it went. My argument was and is that the objective lens is illuminated with a certain number of photons per area unit. Thus a larger objective lens...

New but probably wrong insight about lowlight

Hi, actually both. Same exit pupil but larger objective aperture means more photons per area unit. But the increases magnification helps too. Joachim

    How do you pronounce Leica

New but probably wrong insight about lowlight

Hi, for astronomy aperture is king for many reasons, but the main one is that it limits resolution so you can see smaller objects. Provided that your eye's pupils still can widen enough and your skies are dark enough, you also want a wider exit pupil (and thus less magnification) with that...

Looking for long eye relief binoculars

Hi, not sure if it is in budget, but all Conquest HD models are infamous for providing more ER than some folks w/o glasses can use, especially the 42mm models... Zeiss sends out longer eyecups to those poor souls on request. Joachim

Nikon Monarch Fieldscope vs Celestron Regal M2 80ED vs Vortex Diamondback - tough choice

Hi, great to hear that. Please take some time to test its optical quality inside the return period if you bought online. Either by doing a star test (real or artificial star) or at least try it in good seeing (early morning or on a cool overcast day) and see if you can get a crisp view at 60x...

Carl Zeiss Jena DF 7x50 Extremly early model?

Hi, first of all, welcome to birdforum! You really fooled me with the title, when I read CZJ DF 7x I stopped reading and thought of the cold war era east german DF 7x40 in green rubber... Interesting pair, a bit too old for me to be able to contribute more than what was already mentioned...

    Kowa 82 series prisms query

Hi, Ideally, I would look for a hydrocarbon based vacuum grease for the expected temperature range. Vacuum due to their very low vapor pressures which leads to no or very little gassing out and thus no or very little residue. Silicone grease tends to creep where it is not wanted... like...

    Kowa 82 series prisms query

Hi dipped, great to hear this! Enjoy the view, which is probably as spectacular as my cherry TSN-3... Joachim, now back on the balcony to peep into a mute swan nest across the river...

    Asking for help: Meopta Meostar B1 10 X 42 vs Opticron Aurora BGA VHD 10 x 42

Hi, first of all, welcome to birdforum! And thanks for the great images... a vacation in Norway sounds even better now... Regarding the bins... With your preferences in mind I would look for used (former) alphas too... EDG or Zeiss FL or Zeiss SF come to mind... all are known for great CA...

    Kowa 82 series prisms query

Hi, I am still trying to understand how the the prism coatings were damaged by cleaning them... MgF2 based multicoatings are notoriously inert to chemicals and also not really easy to damage mechanically (both unlike lotus effect based anti rain coatings on objective lenses). If we assume...

Zeiss Victory 7x42 FL internal check after 15 years of use?

Hi, another vote for the don't fix what is not broken party... reasons being: risk of loss or damage during shipping - even insured no fun due to paperwork... unnecessary cost - either for you or the manufacturer - and that means all of us - either by a price hike or just all repairs taking a...

Kowa Genesis 8x22 vs. Swarovski Curio 7x21

Hi, wow... now that's a bold statement... especially since it's not limited to binoculars... Please help me out, who was Swaro trying to play catch me with when they brought out the AT80 scope? Joachim

Do you use your Nikon roofs in the rain?

Hi, while I don't own a Nikon roof, I would have absolutely no problem to use one in any kind of rain. I have done so (not on purpose) with my Nikon porros (E2 8x30 and SE 10x42) which are not waterproof and while they have fogged up at times, after drying them, they were fine and so far no...

    Replacement for M7 8x30

Hi, I would recommend patience while checking used offers for 8x32... 600€ will get you a used pair of 1000€ bins like Conquest HD or Trini HD while for 1000€ you might well score a former alpha like FL, Ultravid, EL or even EDG. Joachim, who paid 850€ for a mint pair of FL 8x32 last year or so...
